Mel Gibson calls reporter an asshole

Oh my, so scandalous.
spoco2says...

I kinda fall on both sides of the fence on this one.

I don't know this show, but by the looks of the set and that it's just a 'via satellite' type interview, I would assume that it's a light sort of show, a fluff show... and so really isn't the place to be getting into stuff like that. Also the guy seems to be doing it out of some personal feelings he has over it, as if he doesn't think Mel should be allowed 'back in' to the world of films etc.

However

Mel has to expect it, come on... This is he first film (as an actor) since it all happened and so it's his first real time out there again... he has to expect it a bit... doesn't he? I can definitely see how it would piss him off no end, and for him he's lived with the repercussions for the whole 4ish years... to us, we heard all about it, and haven't really thought about it since then, so it seems like there is room to discuss it... I'm sure he's discussed it ad nauseum and has repented.

If this were an interview about him, about his life etc. then he'd talk about it I'm sure... but this is a fluff piece advertising the film...

I would be truly fascinated to be able to really talk and get honest answers from Mel in regards to the anti Semite comments... but you'll never hear anything other than what he wants to be perceived.

Which is sad, because I used to really, really like Mel as an actor, and loved Braveheart, thought his directorial chops were great... but I... I just don't know now...

After 4 years he should be ready for this question and have an easy response to it. The whole shocked 'dude come on get over it' doesn't cut it. Besides that he looks like he's either half in the bag or coming off a rough night.

Nah, this reply's better. It's the, 'You wouldn't ask this if we where sitting around having polite conversation.. not to mention if you where asking this to my face.'.

The question is an obvious tabloid move. Yeah he could have had some pre-prepared auto-response to the question handy.. but that's not the Mad Max who chains people's feet to a rigged exploding car that I know.

Granted I suspect Mel has something of an attitude / ego, but better that than acting fake.

burdturglersays...

I hate to break the spell for you but Mel Gibson is not Mad Max.

Unappetizing as it may be, projecting an image as a director/producer is a pretty big deal and he ought to have his shit together because I'm sure it isn't just his money riding on it.

nanrodsays...

The only criticism Mel deserves over this is that after all his years in the business he was dumb enough to forget that you never say anything privately with a microphone in your face

Shepppardsays...

Apparently the "Official" story, is that Mels producer was off-camera making faces at him, and he didn't realise the camera was still transmitting.

Well, I'm sure half of that story is true, anyway.

Xaxsays...

I'm a bit surprised Mel thinks we're stupid enough to believe he was calling his producer the asshole, when clearly he was quite perturbed over the question he had just received from the interviewer. Don't lie to me, asshole.

spawnflaggersays...

I saw Edge of Darkness - it was good, much better than I expected.

It's weird hearing Mel say "dude". I thought he was gonna say "you pissed on my rug, man" somewhere in there... The reporter was being an ass, but Mel should have expected that question. Chances are they had some agreement before the interview to not talk about it, and the guy asked anyway.

I think Mel Gibson is a good actor/director/etc, and I would see his movies regardless of his personal life and viewpoints. Same with Tom Cruise - controversial personal beliefs but the man has talent!

And I bought Shadow Complex

That doesn't mean that I hate Gays or Jews, or condone alcoholism or believe some Xenu bullshit.
Asshole.

dannym3141says...

I don't like bigotry, but i can believe that he has a temper, had a drinking problem, and the two of them combined to leave him saying something very stupid that he immediately regretted. I don't consider him a racist or anything else, i just think he was an drunk idiot. I know i've said some really nasty things to people that i didn't mean when i've been drunk. Ok it may not have been racism but it came from the same place. You don't know why you said it, you didn't mean it even remotely, you just wanted to hurt someone's feelings, you want to take it back immediately and you sure as shit never say it again. He made his apologies and people seem to think he meant it, so that's good enough for me to forget it.

He doesn't look like he's drunk/hungover to me either. I like a famous guy who doesn't go through 3 hours of makeup/a gallon of coffee etc. just to make himself look like a perfect picture of a human. He IS human and if i'm not at home/stayed up late/been working hard, i wake up looking rough too.

This, however, is exactly how i'd expect a tough aussie to act, it's how i WANT him to act. Someone acts like an idiot? Don't stand on ceremony, don't play the passive aggressive politician speak game, call that fat little bald fucker an asshole!

Good on you mel. Just don't let your temper and desire to hurt someone override your personality again and we'll get along just fine!

jatohasays...

I can't believe that he didn't have better prepared answer than that. He's an idiot if he doesn't think he's going to get asked these types of questions. That reporter wasn't even pushy about it.

lucky760says...

I think Mel's response was totally fine and very much reality-based. Anyone who has ever screwed up royally could have a similar reaction when it is brought up years later and they just want to forget what they'd done.

I find his honestly angry reaction to be much more satisfying than if he were to put on a phony smile and provide the canned response his publicists authored for him.

No, no, no... of course he wants to forget the past. But it's so obvious when the reporter asks him the question that Mel looks like an idiot for acting oblivious.

"Oh, I'm sure I have no idea what you mean..? Did I do something in the fairly recent past that came under scrutiny? ME!? MEL GIBSON!?!??"

I mean give us a break. If he had just told the asshole to move on in the first place then he wouldn't have appeared like an asshole himself.

MaxWildersays...

This guy has issues. He's been in the public eye how long? And isn't ready to throw out his best sincere mea culpa on demand? No, no, no. You are a performer, Mel. When someone throws you a soft ball like "Do you think the public will perceive you any differently after all that's been in the news about you?" you perform! This is sheer incompetence, and I would not want to work with him on any project based solely on his inability to downplay what is fairly normal "celebrity" bad behavior. This is arrogance, pure and simple. He's still pissed that he had to do any sort of apologizing at all, and he is too prideful to suck it up and keep his game face on.

Admittedly, it's a stupid game that celebrities have to play, all the groveling when they get caught misbehaving. But the public can and does turn against people. If he sinks a project, he may not get another one. That's how stars disappear.

choggiesays...

^ Hear, hear nanrod. CYA is the celebrities best defense. Someone should give Angelina Jolie a few lessons on saying too much while saying nothing at all!!

And yeah, Gibson looked like pickled, hammered, dog shit who had slept out of doors, in his clothes.

Diogenessays...

i think both the reporter and gibson are assholes, that said...

what i find a bit interesting is the possbility that gibson's gaffe, which imho would normally have been long forgotten by the public, has and will continue to be brought up by 'special interests'... namely, any of many nebulous jewish organizations, i.e. anti-defamation league, jewish-controlled media interests, etc... because it highlights and spotlights a well-known example of anti-semitism

i just don't think 'the public' has that much interest in gibson's past to have continued wondering about his jewish sentiments, but jews have certainly had an axe to grind with him, e.g. drunken anti-semitic remarks, 'the passion of the christ', etc

contrast this gibson interview with another interview now on the sift...

Allen, from a jewish background, took nude photos of and had sex with his teenage adopted 'stepdaughter' soon-yi ... certainly excellent fodder for our sensationalist media, but relatively unmentioned and unremembered
