Guy Assaults Police Officer on Bridge - Gets Shot (nt shown)

July 31st 2009

Police fatally shot a man (not shown) on Centennial Bridge in Davenport after the man allegedly bit an officer's face and slammed his head to the pavement.

He said the officer was looking for a suspect and found a person on the bridge who matched the description a few minutes later.

When the officer approached, Struckman said, the man became belligerent and attacked.

The officer tried to use a Taser gun to subdue the man, but it was ineffective and he "got on top of the officer and tried to choke him."

"He actually bit him in the face and was choking him and slammed his head on the pavement," Struckman said.

I do not condone attacking an officer in the first place, but from a naturalistic point of view it makes perfect sense why he did not listen and chose to fight. He was being ordered, and yelled at from the start, being told what to do, having a taser pointed at him, threatened and finally shot at. Because we are animals by nature; What do we do when we are cornered, threatened, and have our fight or flight adrenaline pumping? He knew he was a big guy. He chose the fight response. When he got tazered he just fought back because he knew he could. He physically was able to resist some of that tazer power too ( or the probes didn't sit well )

Also I really wish the cop started his confrontation with a more polite approach. I never heard the cop explain to the Perp why he had a tazer pointed at him. (it's probably not part of protocal.. meh) The cop never asked "Please sir, can you step over the rail" He just started Barking orders. No one really likes orders barked at them. If a "Please" doesn't work then take it to the next level. In my opinion.

I signed up just so I can say FUCK that cop. If some piece of shit cop comes up to me and pulls a fucking gun/tazer on me without ANY provocation I would want to beat the shit out of him too. He killed an innocent person cause hes a piece of shit with a god complex like most fucking pigs out there. He will prob get a promotion and a pat on the back, fuck him.

The situation was approached the wrong way. The result was exactly what I would have expected.

Draw a weapon prepare to face the consequences, it doesn't matter what color you are wearing.

Any case incident that results in the death of a Perp is the officers fault. The perp was reacting to the officers violence, and threat.

From the news article above:
"Mallory had a lengthy violent history and was a suspect in an unprovoked assault 15 minutes earlier. That assault knocked out Rylan Bebermeyer, a volunteer at the Café on Vine, a free meal site in Davenport that Mallory visited."

You don't approach people like this, in these situations with polite requests. Pretty please with sugar on top gets you nowhere with scumbags like this.

You have this completely backwards. It is the police officers job to stop this suspect. A crime has been committed and there is a nexus between the offence and this suspect. Like it or not, Police have the authority to arrest people who have committed criminal acts. Police are trained to react to resistance and force with only as much force as is required to effect the arrest. This guy gets on his knees like he was instructed and the only force applied to him is a set of handcuffs. If he struggles and pulls away he gets a joint lock. If he tries to choke the officer into unconciousness he gets 9mm of lead. His choice. The suspect always controls how much force is applied to them.

With any luck, someday you will get your chance and you will end up just like this piece of shit.

Yea im sure you'd be perfectly cool with somebody walking up to you and pointing a gun at you without any reason other than you look like a guy that MAY have done something. I'm sure you'd want to give that person a hug. Shut the fuck up.

I think fell prey to the Fundamental Attribution Error, for that I must apologize.

Just walking up to a bad guy and expecting him to bend over backwards to my "Lawful" order is complete bullshit. Contrary, I would have expected him to disobey, which is why this was approached the wrong way.

His hubris served him correctly. He should have tailed the suspect and waited for assistance, because Murphy is always waiting to make an ass out of anyone.

I find it absurd to think that the officer is not in control of his actions.

I cannot bring my self to avoid comment on your last statement directed at TokeyMonster: To think that you would wish that upon anyone, even so vehemently anti authority, is disgusting. That, is provided, I understand your last statment as equating TokeyMonster to a "piece of shit," criminal.

I haven't been in a situation where a police officer has pointed a gun/tazer at me outright but I have been confronted by police and I have had a gun pointed at me by police (I have never been arrested nor have I ever even gotten a ticket). But I know several people personally who have had a gun/tazer pulled out on them the moment the cop sees them, its not a pleasant experience and it makes that person very angry to be degraded by having their life in the hands of a normal PERSON.

In this situation the cop went up to a person walking down the street who matched the description of a person who just got in a fight. I doubt the cop knew the whole story of the confrontation or the person's past criminal record or anything. To get out of the car and start yelling at someone and pointing a weapon with NO explanation whatsoever even while being repeatedly asked is on par with a mugger walking up to you and asking for your wallet. "Get over here and get on your fucking knees"-as a weapon as pointed at you "Get on your knees and give me your fucking wallet"-as a weapon is pointed at you. And in both situations, as clearly seen in this video, if you ask questions like "WHY!?" you will get shot. If that shit wouldn't make the person in that situation angry I don't know what would. Add to that the stereotype, whether right or wrong, but many black people are scared/afraid/mistrustful of the police. Just look on the sift/youtube and see how many police brutality videos there are.

Now in this particular situation not only were the things I just said a factor but this guy was just in a fight and hes already fucking pissed off. Now this shit happens and he gets a gun pointed at him and then shot with a taser for asking "Why?" Take the Fundamental Attribution Error for the suspect to not just that fucking cop. I have seen so many cops act this way and think they are superior to the average citizen. That is not the case and theres so many god damn situations where cops think they have the right to treat people like shit if they don't down bow down and kiss the cop's ass because so many police offi... sorry, because so many PIGS have a fucking god complex its insane. And people go to jail or DIE because of it.

Like SofaKing pointed out,

"Mallory ... was a suspect in an unprovoked assault 15 minutes earlier."

It's Mallory's fault that Mallory is dead. If the officer had a lethal weapon drawn, and Mallory began to resist... we reach the same conclusion.. and it's all due to Mallory's actions. He was a criminal and he fought the law. The officer didn't realize the baggy shirt rule, which was his mistake.

Baggy Shirt Rule: a baggy shirt and a skinny body are the best defense against a taser.

ToKeyMonsTeRsays...

The thing is, whether it is warranted or not, so many officers will approach situations in the same manner only making things worse. This cop like so many others thinks its his right to approach a person/suspect by threatening and pointing a weapon. It pisses me off that people think its ok for police to threaten and intimidate people with no explanation and to oppose that means death. This cop only had to say a few more words and speak without pointing his weapons, and this guy might still be alive. If the cop acted in a rational manner and not as if he is a superior being and the suspect still acted in a threatening manner and was shot and killed then fine. But to approach another human being by threatening them and acting as if you are superior is bullshit, and on SO MANY occasions police officers will do this when there is WAY LESS reason to do it than the situation in this video, and I say this situation didn't even warrant it. And like I said this fucker will probably get patted on the back and touted as a hero.
