Very Disappointed to Announce Another Siftquisition: theneb

This is a serious, serious disappointment, but it's time for another siftquisition in a matter of weeks (?) for the same offense.

Apparently, member theneb submitted Conan O'Brien - Drinking Game and received 105 upvotes for it before it was put up for discussion and discarded as a dupe.

This was 2 weeks 5 days ago (Jan 27). Yesterday, theneb earned his 10th star and almost immediately (about one our later) used his new power to retaliate against all those involved in the discussion of his discarded video.

In very rapid succession, theneb downvoted all queued videos by IssyKitty, arsenault185, MarineGunrock, and jonny, for a total of 14 queued videos downvoted in the span of less than 1 minute.
Please do not down vote a video because you dislike the Sifter who submitted it; this is entirely unacceptable. Instead, vote solely based on the quality of video content.
Now, this is all but identical to the reason for the last siftquisition and the only outcome from that was to make an addition to the FAQ (quoted above).

I was hoping after that harang no one would use their abilities to attack other members. Clearly with this repetition we'll now have to enact definitive action for such behavior.

So... Now what?
choggie says...

Mandatory Ass-Handing Roast-
Annoucing a Pre-determined duration, all sifter who wish to participate, may lampoon, deride, critique, or otherwise place the accused in the virtual stocks in the center of town. After which public humiliation, no time off for bad behavior, simply welcomed back, ego reduced to string cheese on the hood of a car in the summer, and back in our good graces.....

If anyone decides this be retroactive in nature, I'm sure you can find reason to place me in the stocks, and throw some tomaters......

MarineGunrock says...

I'm glad I only had one queued video at the time. At the very least, suspend his donwoting privileges for now, lest he go on his spree again after seeing this post.

Didn't we decide last time with QM's Siftquisition that future offenders would be banned?

lucky760 says...

The last one was such a mess I don't remember the whole final outcome, tbh, but that does sound strikingly familiar now that you mention it. That definitely should have been added to the FAQ.

So, is that how we proceed, just an immediate, outright ban? I'm very unhappy about the abuse, but I still can't help feeling bad to do that to someone who has actually spent a bit of time making progress on the Sift. (He's been a member since late 2006.)

BillOreilly says...

Let's call a meeting to select a committee to form a group to draft a document to banish this ruthless and inhumane type of behavior!

Goodness knows, this stuff is really important, and downvoting peoples' internet videos has been proven to have lasting psychological effects for years to come!

jonny says...

Lucky, I understand why this would anger you so, especially coming so close on the heels of quantumushrooms's siftquisition. But I'm very much against this sort of public action.

I really had no intention of starting anything like this with my initial comments to issy, gunrock, and arsenault. It seemed obvious to me that the votes were all cast in a very short amount of time. I was just wondering why. Once that was discovered, I had planned to write a private message to theneb to let him know that that kind of behavior was childish and obvious, perhaps with a link to qm's siftquisition as a suggestive warning.

The solution to this kind of problem is not a FAQ entry or banning or anything like that. MINK had the right idea. Would it be possible to prevent voting on a vid (up or down) until an amount of time equal to its runtime has elapsed from when it's first viewed?

MarineGunrock says...

^I really don't think that would stop anyone from doing this.

Look, I really don't care about one measly vote on one of my videos. But the fact of the matter remains that not even a month has passed since the public flogging of QM for this exact behavior and yet theneb did it anyway, even knowing that (1)He could be caught, (2)someone was banned for this not a month ago and (3)Lucky can look through the database to find the most arbitrary of numbers, like the amount of times that Arsenault185 has rubbed one out to "A most wonderful magic trick", so finding out at what times the votes were cast would not prove to be a challenge.

He knew that it was inappropriate, and he did it anyway. It is quite possible that "an example needs to me made" or "a precedence has to be set."

Thylan says...

I think the decision then was 2week ban first offense. permanent ban for 2nd.

as MG linked to Dag:

>> ^dag:
Beyond QM I think this is also a referendum on voting and the community. I see this vindictive behavior as a kind of vote fraud.
I don't want it to become commonplace, as it will lead to acrimony and possibly the complete degradation of the site from a great community to a perpetual shit-flinging festival.
So I take this very seriously as an important decision-point for VideoSift.
On the other hand, as much as I disagree with QM in almost all his comments, I recognise that it's important to protect dissenting voices and alternative views. I don't support an outright ban.
In this case, (and any future cases) I recommend a 2-week suspension, with complete banning for a second offense.
We should apply the same penalty to Mkone's inane copycat downvoting spreee. (if you're going to be a jerk - at least be an original one).
Also, I don't agree with "retribution" tit-for-tat down voting sprees.
What say ye all?

theneb says...

I'm sorry to all for my actions, but I was very bitter about the previous sift. The dupe seriously harmed all the work I'd put into getting any any star status and even took away an extra point.

I loved the fact that one of my videos had finally hit the top 15 and even became number 1, the reason for the dupe was very unexpected given finding the video that accused the dupe wasn't exactly easy. Then for me to loose an extra point & my star status for the video was a dagger into the heart.

Sarzy says...

I find it somewhat disturbing that this wasn't a heat-of-the-moment, moment of passion / not thinking type of thing. It was clearly planned. That's somewhat sociopathic, if you ask me.

MarineGunrock says...

Hard to find? All you had to do was type "conan" into the search bar. Basically, it comes down to this: We've all had dupes. Most of us have had dupes that accrued a lot of votes before being discarded as a dupe. I myself had a dupe that got 22 votes and stayed sifted for almost a month before I saw it was a dupe and discarded it. What did I do then? Did I get my panties in a bunch and go to the original and downvote it? No, I killed mine and upvoted the other.

joedirt says...

Bwahahaha!!! You made your bed, now lie down.

i don't get the problem here. I know you have the ability to code up a simple script to stop downvotes after 5 in a row or X in one day. It might cramp ant's style, but it seems this is the way to fix this problem instead of worrying about little users micromanagement clicks.

No one knows better than me how hard it is to search for dupes. But as has been stated again and again, dupes get discarded, no matter how many votes they got or how hard it is to find the original. Since it wasn't an exact duplicate, I sent it for discussion instead of discarding it outright, which I do not hesitate to do for any vids that are exact dupes. The consensus was that it was effectively a duplicate.

MarineGunrock says...

Theneb was man enough to come to me and apologize for his/her immature and stupid actions (his words) - that makes him alright in my book. Whether the community votes for a ban to keep in accordance with policy, or decides to forgive him is the community's choice. My vote is that since he was man enough to apologize for what he did, I say we at least go easy on him, if not "not ban" him at all. - But I understand how that makes a slippery slope and all.

smibbo says...

half-ban: take away posting power for a week. Dude, if you're going to get THAT upset about your posted vids, maybe you need a time-out from posting. Seriously, I KNOW how frustrating it is to keep trying to post a vid and you keep getting ignored or you have to discard and meanwhile people who already have diamonds are getting sifted left and right. Trust me, it is something anyone would pout over occasionally. On a grumbly day one can sometimes do silly things. BUT to take it out on the people who are simply doing one of the expected jobs here on the sift is truly toddler-ish. We (that's WE, meaning ALL OF US) supposed to call "dupe" when we see it. The fact that you had a blog first should be comforting - most of us who dupe don't even get that.

I just hate seeing someone act a toddler and THEN be pouty abiout it. Its annoying, yes but its not "a dagger to the heart" fer crissakes.

One week suspension of privelleges for abusing privellege.

I'd like to request that my account is banned, I agree with others who have posted towards such effect and believe it's best for the community.

I won't make any fuss or hold any grudges towards any of you guys, I wish to thank all of you for so far an excellent site and an even better distraction.

Cheers

blankfist says...

theneb's account is henceforth banned, but since he has seen the error of his ways it has henceforth been reinstated. Yay! Justice is served. Everyone is happy. Fade out.

On a lighter note, MG, I have to say the new avatar fits you well! Haha! Kudos for having the "avocados" to change it to a shaved [ahem] pussy, but more importantly I am overjoyed to see that horrendously scary Armenian Werewolf avatar finally replaced.

dag says...

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

Why do I get the feeling that theneb wants to be punished? I picture him sitting at his computer covered in leather with a ball gag in his mouth.

VideoSift is turning into the place to go for harsh punishment - if that's your bent.

xxovercastxx says...

I was one of the few who, during the QM siftquisition, said he shouldn't be banned because there was no written rule stating the criteria of a downvote (or upvote for that matter) and that many people voted based on things other than the content of the video.

As a result of that process, we've got a written rule. I see no reason to softball theneb. I agree with MG that it seems a shame to drop the hammer when he's apologized, but the rule is the rule.

rottenseed says...

whatev...my day won't change without him being here, I don't see the point in banning him other than to exercise power. If that's the case, you should just go sign up to be on the Baltimore police force, I hear there's a position opening up.

jonny says...

so he gets banned but the votes remain intact. genius!

[edit] struck above - votes were removed. At least something makes sense. The point of that comment wasn't to whine about my vids, but to point out that the damage that was done had been left in place, while the repentant member was abused. I really don't think theneb should've been banned, despite his bondage fetish. This was a really minor infraction as things go, and could very easily have been handled between the parties involved. Oh well. All's well that ends sifty.

jonny says...

meanwhile, bugs in the system run rampant while new features are introduced, and one by one, some of the best sifters are leaving. I'm pretty sure my days are numbered. I'll keep trying, but if things don't dramatically change in how this site is run, I'll be forced to see it as yet another brilliant concept that was allowed to fail.

Your expression of contrition is appreciated by the Sift at large

I had no idea what was going on until I wandered over to check out the Spore trailer (upvoted, nice). http://www.videosift.com/video/Spore-release-date-trailer

I was confused by the "banned symbol" and quickly figured out what all this was about.

The Sift's a Good Place and we're sorry we were so harsh with you but thanks for taking it in Good Spirit - you'll be welcome back to full privileges in my books and we'll put this all behind us when the awkward period ends.

Yay sifting.

And OMFG the jokes in this thread are funnier than this week's Yahtzee Review. Seriously.

I've liberally sprinkled upvotes on commments throughout (rather than making the lame "oh, too bad you can't upvote sift talks" observation, because well, this).

Did anyone give Lucky a *quality star for bringing out so much laughter and mirth, along with dag's bizarrely hilarious in-depth knowledge of S&M practices?
