Land of Mine Trailer

psycop says...

These boys neither chose the age of conscription nor to go to war. Given their age and the time in the war, they would have been forcably made to fight. If you had the misfortune to be born then and there, thier fate could be yours.

Being in the German army did not imply being a Nazi, the majority of the German population were victims as well, pointlessly lead to slaughter by monsters.

Those of them that would have survived the fighting ended up here. They didn't feed them. They worked until they died. They expected them to die. They wanted them to die.

The Geneva Conventions were signed in 1929 making this an official war crime if that's important to you. I'd say the law does not define ethics, and I'd be happy to say this is wrong regardless of the treaty.

As for alternatives for mine clearance. I'm not a military expert, but I believe there are techniques, equipment, tools or vehicles that can be used to reduce the risk to operators. Frankly it's besides the point. Just because someone cannot think of a solution they prefer over running a death camp, does not mean they are not free to do so.

If you have the time, I'd recommend watching the film. It's excellent. And as with most things, particularly in times of war, it's complicated.

Truer words were never said.
These kids should be eternally grateful they weren't treated the same way Germany treated POWs.

Beaver chews through tree limb

Apparenly their teeth have iron in them which is why they are so hard and red. Also imagine how long a human would take to get through a similar size branch with primitive tools. Judging by the Primative Technology guy videos I'd say quite a while?

What a nicely designed wee beast.

Karma Comes for Traffic Line Cutters

A mate of mine used to work as a motorway construction guy and he said the hard shoulder is murder alley.

We ended up breaking down and having to stop on the hard shoulder in a minibus one time and he forced everyone to get out and get over the barrier while we waited.

We thought it was a bit much then he told us how many of his colleages had been swiped by a car or truck while working... maybe the fresh air will do us good?

something folks don't talk about when discussing the dangerousness of being a police officer: carpal tunnel. ⭐ man, that's a lot of tickets.

[at least one, silver p.u., cut back in. if the officer saw it, and made them pull over, would there be a second offense for unlawful merging?👮‍♂️ ]

This Electrician rigged his van to stop tool thieves

psycop jokingly says...

I mean this guy has clearly been the victim of a crime. And I think as a victim of that crime he has the right to protect his property.

And as a part of protecting his property he's obviously entitled to pick deterent for those who would do him harm. It's clear he should have the right to decide that deterent without limit. In a well adjusted society we let everyone, individually, decide how they want to hurt people they don't like. There is no way this could be bad.

And to protect his property he gets to harm, or harm peoples bodies. Nobody would argue this is wrong. It's only right of course that those people, who upon having their persons harmed have been the victim of a crime. And I think as a victim of that crime they have the right to cause any harm they see fit to those who have harmed them. There is no way this could be bad.

The only sensible way to proceed is everyone hurting anyone in anyway they find personally justifiable without law or concensus. Otherwise it's just chaos out there!

On the other hand he did get the autosad piano music in first, so you know, he basically wins.

Also maybe get insurance and take reasonable steps to protect yourself like taking the toolbag in the house? I get that nobody sees it coming the first time, but if it's an absolute epidemic of crime maybe word would get around?

Well in my many years of competitive tiddly winks, I've had some close calls, but nothing like this.

Perhaps the choice of passtime might itself be a factor?

How To NOT Use A Roundabout

psycop says...

I'm from the home of the good 'ole roundabout and honestly... I don't get how you are meant to use this thing. Also yes, ours are absolutely plastered with signs and help.

Is this two one way roads, or was it just random chance that all the traffic was going one way? Normally one side of the road would be for return traffic?

Took a wee while, but I found a picture of a normal looking roundabout and even in a country where people use them all the time there are a lot of attempts to tell you how to use it:

Cop Rock - Baby Merchant

After seeing this floating around recently I decided to watch the series through with a mate. It's absolutely, wonderfully awful.

It's tone is absolutely all over the place where it's actually surprisingly hard hitting and progressive in the themes in some places and then suddently absolute nonsense musical in others. I highly recommend if you enjoy terrible things.

Pissed Physicist says "Follow the Science" is nonsense

psycop says...

I think she's describing Hume's Guillotine (http://www.philosophy-index.com/hume/guillotine/), or the is-ought problem, which is that certain statements describe what "is" and other describe what "ought to be", but you can't go from one to the other.

So it's raining outside. And if you go out side without a coat you'll get cold. So you ought to put a coat on?

Depends if you care about getting cold. The first two are facts, the last one is a choice, and the facts can't tell you what you want. The heart wants what the heart wants.
