star wars prequel-nostalgia critic gets owned by Mr plinkett

a cleverly edited back and forth where mr plinkett (redlettermedia) takes down the nostalgia critic (thatguywithglasses) and his "top 11 good things from the star wars prequels".

pure ownage.

Serious ownage. Funny and informative as usual. Mr Plinkett always nails movie reviews, and all things movies. I enjoy his reviews way more then the movies themselves. Every.Single.Time.

Couldn't agree more on the lightsaber fights.

I think it was Lucas himself who asked that the lightsaber should be moved as if it had real weight even though it was made of, well, light. I think the fact the actors appear to have to exert themselves to throw and parry blows makes the whole thing seem more intense despite the slower pace of the fight. Vader crumbles under the shear force of the enraged Luke's blows - does anybody ever get overpowered in this manner in the prequels? I understand this logic that Jedi at the height of the Republic would be more skilled with a blade, but it results in two characters flailing around striking the air in front of their opponent with blows that appear to have no force behind them at all.

I must be the only one who found both of these people to be kind of annoying, in one corner we have Cynical Nerd and in the other we have Upbeat Nerd, what better pairing for a YouTube deathmatch.
I thought the lightsaber fights in both trilogies were fine, they were just following different models, I thought the acrobatics of the newer films was fun to watch. And why bother making everyone pretend that they're swinging around claymores when both the film makers and the audience know those energy blades probably weigh next to nothing?
I always kind of assumed the wooden acting (especially with the Jedi) came from Luca's directing, I imagine he was shooting for a kind of Zen sense of cool but didn't manage to find the right balance.
And I'll never understand why some people hate CG so much, it's a tool that can be used well or poorly, just like models and miniatures and fully built sets. But from the way some people talk about it you'd think life before CG was all some kind of golden age where everything was perfect.

I had never heard of "thatguywithglasses" (and thank fucking goodness) before this, but after seeing this guy utter absolute bullshit while wearing my traditional nerd uniform I finally understand why idiots like "The Big Bang Theory".

This guy isn't a nerd, he's a awkward apologist who is stuck in his own, entirely unproductive world featuring whatever pop culture spectacle coupled with his shallow thoughts.

On the other hand, despite being a psycho hooker murderer, Mr. Plinkett is one of us.

Now I'm worried that when I'm in my 60s I'll want to murder a hooker. Ugh, pop culture confuses me.

Quboidsays...

Whoever put this together is rather dishonest.
NC: "These lightsaber battles looked prettier (but the plot/characters sucked)"
P: "These lightsaber battles suck because of the plot/characters (but at least they look pretty)"

OH THEY'RE SO DIFFERENT!

Truckchase, he's none of those things. The Big Bang Theory?! If you also think that TBBT is cheap, lousy comedy then NC might be right up your street. He's definitely not upbeat.

Umm, someone has cut the original Plinkett reviews in to the other guy, it's not a direct rebuttal. You can catch all the original reviews (and reviews of other movies) on http://redlettermedia.com/plinkett/

That being said, if you watch some of Plinkett's stuff, putting aside the little mass murderer/cat raping/hot pockets bits he throws in for a bit of levity, he has some very deep insights in the technical side of filming. He deconstructs scenes very intelligently and he explains things neatly, giving you a solid explanation why you previously just had a "something about this scene bothers me" feeling.

How much can this be repeated? The saber fights in the OT were FAR more realistic. The new ones they are barely paying attention, flipping and twisting and spinning and twirling their weapons around in a flashy, showy obviously choreographed dance. In the OT they fought much more slowly but with precision, focus and skill. Each blow had purpose beyond pretty colors flashing on screen. Nobody EVER turned their back on their opponent or (for fuck sake) leaped over them. It helps that the sabre fighting was choreographed by the legendary Bob Anderson who coached Errol Flynn and played Vader in the sabre fights himself.

I know, in this day in age everything in the movies has to be fast, showy and mesmerizing but those original Star Wars sabre duels are so memorable because they were raw and realistic. You think when life or death hangs in the balance you ever actually turn your back to your opponent? Or swirl your weapon flashily? No you make every strike, country, parry and guard a deliberate action. It's about outmaneuvering and out thinking your opponent, not how many blows you get in per second.
