First, its not the KGB, the KGB was in the Cold War, it's called the FSB now.

Russia is slowly sliding backwards to the state control run by the FSB, the government is slowly confiscating properties owned by the oligarchs. Putin is from the stock of FSB, it is filled with proud people who are disgusted with what has happened to the Soviet Union. The botched switch from central planning to capitalism only helped this.
