I wonder if the dog will figure it out. I remember reading about a test where a plate of glass was placed between a barracuda and some smaller fish. Eventually the barracuda came to the realization that he could never eat the smaller fish. They then removed the glass and he never attacked the other fish. I wish I could find the study on it. It was really intriguing.

Conditioned. Just like people. The dog is no different than people who conform to cultural or societal conventions (like work) that tell them they must perform in a certain fashion, ie For the Good of the "Team". Why? Because. No other reason is necessary to elicit obediance.
