A hilarious rant (all the more because every word he says is true) on the many faults that make DVDs bull crap. VHS was the real deal, son.

And as long as standards are controlled by corporate interests, it will continue to get worse. Bluray is a prime example.

If I have a DVD and I know I want to see it numerous times.. I rip it and tear out all the ads and bullshit and reburn it. Done. Should I have to do that? No. When you pay money for a damn DVD it should NOT have ADS in it. That is bullshit.

I don't want TV anymore because of the ads. Zero. If they invade films more than they have. Then I will cease to use that entertainment medium as well. It doesn't affect my quality of life. If anything... it improves it. No more bullshit.

He raises a few valid points, but really, all I could think about while I was watching this was Louis CK's wise words.

I mean really, we're living in a time when we can watch any movie we want in pristine quality whenever we feel like it -- so what if you have to sit through a few ads, or deal with a fiddly menu. I know most of us are too young to remember, but there was a time where if you missed a movie on the big screen, that was it. You could never watch it again. You just had to hope it eventually got reissued back to theatres. Imagine not having the luxury of being able to watch your favourite film whenever you feel like it, or at all, for that matter. Yeah.

Yeah.

I can understand that sentiment, but the same point can be made about just about anything at any time. Boy shouldn't the Romans have been happy they didn't have to live in caves and walk around in awe of the fact that they had entertaining gladiator games to watch.

Fact remains, we have technology that can work better, why shouldn't it? After all this is about corporate interests deliberately holding back the functionality of a service you have PAID for either because of their interest in further profits outside of what you have already given them (commercials) or just stupidity (absolutely horribly retarded menus and boxes), which probably angers me the most because there's really no reason what so ever for it.

So yeah, of course we've made progress from what once was, I would be more worried if we didn't. But that's no reason to stop demanding more progress still, we wouldn't want to stagnate after all.

Btw: despite the quote that rant wasn't aimed specifically at Sarzy, but rather at the whole mentality that such comments and Louis CK's bit seem to come from. I can appreciate the comedy of it, but I see no actual basis for it.

Unskippable bits really annoy me and he's bang on about several other points. If I bought alot more DVDs it would really irk but most of the time it seems like a waste of time unless you really, really cannot stand adverts or or simply must own a particular show or movie.

I can't wait until the angry video game nerd adopts blu-ray

I'm glad I kept my old Apex dvd player - it always lets me skip to the title menu, because it ignores the no-skip flag on dvd's.

I agree with all his bullshitier technology comments, except for deterioration. If you take reasonable care of a DVD, it will last 50 years (not DVD-R's, they eventually begin to fade) - whereas VHS are guaranteed to degrade every time you watch them, or if someone decides to put them near magnets.

I rarely if ever buy DVDs. When I do it's for movies I really really want to have in absolutely the best quality. But even then all the things he mentions annoy me.

MythTv (Linux DVR) awesomely does away way allot of this - you can skip through all those normally unskippable FBI warnings, animated menus and bullshit.

And all the above has allot to do with people pirating movies off the internet - avoids it all.

The short ident(s) at the beginning rightly belong to a film, I like it when they change the music/look in accordance with the film that comes after.
I miss the VHS forward/rewind noise as well..so from time to time I do watch them oldschool tapes, especially those that are unreleased on DVD.

^ No, that's how you justify why you download movies... you really do it because it's free.

Tell me if there was a DVD/BluRay of the movie and a downloaded version, both for free, you wouldn't take the DVD/BluRay.

I download movies too, and then if I like them, I buy them on DVD... because I have young kids I hardly ever get to go to the movies to see if I like something and I don't buy DVDs sight unseen.

As damn annoying as the unskippable stuff is, that's about my only complaint with them at all really. I never, EVER bought a movie on VHS, ever, even back then I was of the mindset 'I am not paying for something that degrades so quickly'.

I have hundreds of DVDs though, and on occasion when I have watched something on VHS it reminds me just how damn good we have it now... pristine visuals, surround sound, fascinating extras, the ability to skip anywhere.

And his whine about the movies not starting back where you left it... um... most DVD players have memory for the last X DVDs you played in there, so that's a moot point too.

Not that I didn't enjoy his rant and agreed with some of it, but I think he was stretching on some points.

Why not recycle the boxes? Jerk. Boxes are good for keeping dust out. And not all movies owned by the same company was - at least for some period of time - one of the reasons for not all the movies being available.

Yeah, this is why I prefer to watch things either with a 1. Kickass DVD player or 2. Kickass DVD playback software. I've been lazy and after I did my last O/S install I didn't really customize my computer much... this must be changed.

Also interesting - it's on sale, 15% off until Monday.

Pricey though... but powerful too. Note that it has a free trial period if you're not sure about it.

This video also applies to Internet video.

Why can't they have a standard in viewing video, but no every site has to have there fucked up way to do stuff. Thinking is original.

Its like youtube saying they have HD video now, its not fucking HD its just slightly better. Its just a turd with perfume on it. Its not even fucking 720p.

Or you get the ass ads on the video. Or websites that direct you to websites that autoplay video crap so when you are reading or watching another video that window is in background playing some fucking "Congrates you won a Ipod" sound.

Give me a fucking website that has fucking video that does not have fucking ads in it, if i like your fucking site I will glading pay $1 a month to visit your fucking site, if your site fucking sucks you think "learn how to whiten my teeth for $10" ads is going to make me want to click it?

Lots of sites i visit are ad free and fucking live on since the 90s still cause they fucking get donations from people who like the fucking site.

Whenever I read a book, I skip the acknowledgements section, because a long list of names is pointless and boring unless your name is in the list.

Opening credits are annoying verbal diarrhea unless constructed in a novel way.

Put the credits at the end because almost no one cares enough to stay and watch the credits unless their name is in the list.

Often acknowledgments tell something about how the book idea came about so I often check them and then go into speed reading mode to check if I see familiar names, but they are showing a book is created with the help of many people, no just the author.

In case of films there are
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opening_credits or
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Closing_credits
and this is a way to give indeed credit to them and give the viewer artist names for future reference. For the viewer the credits can be great, especially when there's a well-done title sequence:
