Fuck me, the guy driving that knows what he's doing! Awesome yet terrifying.

Being able to reduce costs and produce cheap wood products from tree farms is likely the best way to save existing diverse forests. It's clear to see in the video that the machine is working in a tree farm.

That's Mecha! or at least an arm/hand. Seriously, the first large scale machine I've seen with that kind of dexterity. All it needs is some legs and a pubescent school girl pilot.

we can build epic structures. copulate and populate. we can suture the future shut like a cut. we can replicate structures which replicate us.

Wow that machine just slices those trees up. There's no cuddling after or anything.

"Mister!" he said with a sawdusty sneeze,
"I am the Lorax. I speak for the trees.
I speak for the trees, for the trees have no tongues.
And I'm asking you, sir, at the top of my lungs" -
he was very upset as he shouted and puffed-
"What's that THING you've made out of my Truffula tuft?"

Okay, so here is my question.

Why not take the machine at the end of the arm, and have it run up and down the trees in place?

Since this is a tree farm machine, set it up on a golf cart with four of these things, with unactuated folding arms to supply power. have a simple system to attach the things to the trees and let four of them work in parallel from the four corners of the vehicle. Since you are not lifting as much weight you need a smaller machine, and you can get more done in the same amount of time with a less expensive machine.

Also make the whole thing RF controlled so that nobody has to be anywhere near all that falling wood.

That's my initial engineering geek response to this, I wonder if that's patentable? (and does this count as publishing?)

Nothing quite as beautiful as a tree getting cut up. Not only does it mean buildings, furnature, and all kinds of other cool stuff - but it shows Earth's single most renewable resource being used exactly as it should be.

I saw a show about this machine a few years ago. Quite incredible, really. This crappy LiveLeak video doesn't do it justice.

I thought there'd be a bit more hippie outrage over this sort of thing... kudos from this son of a forest engineer.
