Yeah bob is probably right on the loon comment. There are tons of videos on the sift of puppies howling when people whistle at them... they just do it... no need to "teach" them.

That man is none other than *British "wolfman" Shaun Ellis. He's even lived with wolves for a while.

Like human children, young animals often learn by example. I don't know if howling is learned or instinctive, but I have a feeling it's some combination of both. Even if it's 100% instinctive, it still doesn't hurt to howl with the wolf cub, does it?

Its not about teaching them to howl, its about teaching them HOW to howl. In the wild wolves and their descendants, dogs have a sort of "language" of howls based on pitch, length, fluctuations and other variables that communicate different things to their pack and other packs in the area. This is why dogs always start howling when you leave the house unless you teach them not to. It's their way of trying to locate you, their pack leader. It's like baby humans don't need to be taught to make noises and sounds, but the do need to be taught language and syntax in order to effectively communicate with other people.

Still, I'll bet that guy wears a wolf T-shirt on a daily basis.

well, sure but, i highly doubt this guy is teaching the pup "language and syntax" with which to effectively communicate with other wolves. i think he's just howling.
