White Stripes - 'Ball and Biscuit'; long, bluesy performance

Meg and Jack explore 'Ball and Biscuit' with a little 'Fever to Tell' (from the Yeah Yeah Yeah's) medley'ed in at the end.

I've heard-tell from a few folks that the White Stripes are not great in concert. I've seen plenty of evidence that they're great performers, including this little gem of a performance for VH1 cameras. My theory is that they're not a modern rock band, and thus struggle in huge rock venues (where most people see them).

I don't understand why they're so popular. In my personal opinion, their compositions are all ridiculously bland. The drumming lacks any sort of zest at ALL. I generally expect a "professional musician" to display a lot more skill than that. Be creative, etc. Seriously, she seems like she's totally incapable of focusing on more than three parts of the set at once.

Its roots-rock, JAPR. Folk and blues-revivalists (ex: Bob Dylan) tend to revel in the anti-perfection, anti-production, and singular voice of the originals (ex: Woody Guthrie, Robert Johnson). By 'singular voice' I mean a minimally invasive backing following the lead wherever the lead wants to go.

Implying that for performers to be good they must skillfully comply to playing their instrument as 'professionally' as others is practically the definition of musical close-mindedness.

... not that I'm calling you close-minded; I don't know you, and for all I know you wrote your comment in 15 seconds based on watching 10 seconds of the clip... I'm just throwing that out there, is-all. Spicing up the boards!

Help me please. If you dislike their sound, or Meg's drumming, or their posing, or their whatever, why do you care enough to watch them and comment? No judgement, just curious. It's like arguing whether or not you like the taste of peanut butter. I extremely dislike Clay Aiken, so I don't waste my time on all things Clay Aiken. What gives? Are you trying to like them, only to repeatedly find it not working for you?

This seems like a common malady on the internet.

"Oooh, here's something I dislike. And hooray, they have a place to leave comments so I can tell other people how much I dislike this thing."

What to make of people who define themselves more by the things they hate than the things they like? Draw your own conclusions.

Me? I like the stripes. Meg's drumming has gotten a lot better over the years. Jack's guitar-work is incredible, as always.
