lol.. I'm willing to bet she cannot locate the US on a map. She's one of those US Americans that doesn't have maps, if only our education over here gave her a map..

I find it extremely hard to believe that a fifth of Americans cannot locate their own country on a map. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that question wasn't too fair, that figure seems made up to me.

But, to be honest, she seemed as dumb as a brick.

What I can't wrap the melon around, is why this type of look appeals to so many white folks. Blonde, doe-eyed, all that goddamn make-up....the girl that asked the question is cuter than this bimbo, and icing on the cake, for never past the first date. is her opening her mouth.....

all that make-up and finery??? She better enjoy it while it lasts....cause her ass is bound to be as big as her Max Factor bill, when she has 2 snot-nosers cut from the mold, running around her ankles in a few years.......

She probably had what she was going to say memorized. "Help in south africa" was tied to her answer one way or another for a vote to say "Aww, she's so outgoing" and then the question just kinda came out of nowhere.

Yeah I think that statistic has to be wrong. It's pretty easy considering that all maps made in the US place America at the center. I was shocked the first time I saw a European map and realized they don't consider us to be the center of the world.

But I think she makes a good point about South Africa, our education here should help them over there. We may not have maps, but they probably haven't even heard of them.

I'd tend to agree with the idea behind Sheppard's comment...

She likely practiced over and over and over for the question part, as it was not her strong-suite, but instead of working on critical thinking skills she was really just memorizing the answers to the particular questions she was practicing. Apparently her coaches thought questions about Africa and Iraq might come up.

In the stress of the moment her brain just reverted back to the ingrained answers it had mastered, and jumbled them into an odd, spam-mail-like poem about her personal feelings on children, Africa, Iraq, etc.

The stats are NOT wrong. 1 in 5 cannot find US on a world map.

Here's more from the CNN 2002 report. http://archives.cnn.com/2002/EDUCATION/11/20/geography.quiz/
Among 18- to 24-year-old Americans given maps:
87 percent cannot find Iraq
83 percent cannot find Afghanistan
76 percent cannot find Saudi Arabia
70 percent cannot find New Jersey
49 percent cannot find New York
11 percent cannot find the United States

The stats of 20% are probably from 2006-7 and maybe even teens not 18-24.

Seriously, lots of people I know could give better speeches than most of the presidential candidates this year.

There should be a nationwide uniform standardized test required for graduation from high school, and people should be required to attend until they either graduate or submit a coherent petition in writing explaining why they want to quit.

Joe Dirt: If eleven % of americans can't find the US, that's one in ten, not one in five.

Good call too Bamdrew. You can see hours of speech practice crumbling to dust in a few seconds. I feel so embarassed and sorry for the amount of shit this girl is going to take. But at the same time, Memorare is right. This will probably help her career. AAARRRGGGHH!!

Exact transcription... we worked hard on this!

"Recent polls have shown a fifth of Americans can't locate the U.S. on a world map. Why do you think this is."

"I personally believe that you as Americans are unable to do so because some people out there in our nation don't have maps and I believe that our education, like such as South Africa, and the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and I believe that they should, our education over here, in the U.S., should help the U.S., er, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries so we will be able to build up our future, for our children."

Once, I was in a spelling bee, and I actually made it to one of the last two people on stage...
I had already successfully spelled several difficult words. I was so nervous, and the tension mounted as the people dropped out, one by one, until it was just me and this other chick.
The judges said, "Patricia, spell "milk"."
It of course was her well-formed habit no matter what the word was to ask for it in a sentence. The judges did so, and she spelled "M-I-L-K".
I was freaking out in my head.
My opponent got the word "milk".
By Murphy's Law, mine was destined to be something horribly un-spellable.
I didn't even need to hear the word, really.
I was going to screw it up.
"Laura, spell "treacherous"."
ME: "Treacherous. T-R-E-T-C-H-Z-P-L-W-X-G-K-(go on like this for what seems like ten minutes)...O-U-S. Treacherous."
The judges were laughing out loud.
One of them said in between chortles : "I'm sorry, that's incorrect."
I totally sympathise with this chick.
