I'm so glad I was brought up without religion so I didn't have to struggle through those phases.
I am glad you did not have to deal with it also. It is not an easy process.
My life:
0 to 21 very Christian
When I was 21 I decided to read the Bible cover to cover to so I could have a better understanding of what I believed. After finishing I had a very hard time accepting that this book was the word of God.
21 to 25 I tried very hard to stay a Christian because everyone I knew was a Christian
26 to 31 limbo
31 to 32 atheist
My journey is not over, I have still have not told my family. I just hold my tongue when I hear them talking religion. It would break my parents hearts for them to think I was going to hell.
So sad that so much time and energy and heartache comes about because of it.
I just went to youtube to watch the second part of this, and what ad should be there... but one with Carl Sagan as it's picture.
The tagline is "So simple any child can understand. So complex, no atheist can solve" "The Atheist's riddle"
Oh man, this has got to be some severe bullshit if it's trying to hook in scientific thinking people by using Carl Sagan as a bait.
So... the site is this piece of balderdash and after digging around, here is the ridiculous 'riddle' in all its glory:
WHAT? WHO SAID all 'codes' are created by a conscious mind? WHO SAID that? Where is that written? Where is it written anywhere (outside of religious dogma) that nature cannot create means for storage of information.
Just... SHIT... how does someone build a website and PAY for ads to try to advance shite like this? How does anyone BELIEVE this?
MAN people like this make me angry... And his proof that no-one can solve this? He posted it on a FORUM on the NET... and THEN... conveniently doesn't mention that it's continued to be posted to... and THEN brushes off any and all valid rebuttles as false with his own brand of insane logic.
It's people like that which make religion SO dangerous.
People believing in a god is fine.
People having personal beliefs in an afterlife are fine.
People treating other badly because their beliefs differ, and the dissemination of blatant ignorance masquerading as truth like this... are NOT fine.
"Hey, you treat people with religious beliefs differently than those without, how are you different" I hear from the back.
No... not so. I have friends who are religious, including one who actually runs her own church. BUT she doesn't try to push her beliefs on me, I don't do the same back... she's a lovely person... no issue at all.
It's people like this who take science, use simplistic and WRONG logic and try to repackage religion as science that really get my goat, as they fool some people, they do. And if they don't fool people into believing, they can indeed give people who are struggling to come to terms with their lack of faith a believed 'scientific' answer that may cause them to falsely hold onto their belief longer and make the transition even harder and more painful than it need be.
Horrible, narrow minded people.
I remember going to the Synagogue and having Kiddush on Fridays when I was young, up to about the age of 8-9, when I finally realized there was supposed to be some sort of higher meaning to this. Up until then I treated it like a cultural custom (not that I would have fully understood that phrase at the time), meaning I just did it because my family did it. Then one time, during one of the holidays, it dawned on me that some of the people around me actually believe the Bible quite literally, and I realized my entire thought process was assuming they were idiots. That was when I first regarded myself as a non-believer. The concept of Atheism came later.
Amusingly enough, years later I found out my dad was going through the motions for us, so me and my brother would have some sort of faith while growing up. Last I checked, he was somewhere between Buddhism and Atheism
