Top Ten Most Innovative Games

As told by GameTrailers.com... although some of the choices on the list and the order can raise a bit of disapproval...
Aemaethsays...

Ya, but we're talking about INNOVATION. I disagree about body harvest and a couple others. I think Sim City should replace the Sims. The only thing really innovative about the Sims is that the the objectives where unique, but even that had been done by free-roaming RPG's.

neteansays...

yeah, lets also talk about Sim City....

Let's also not forget Elite... one of the first games to get rid of the notion of winning/losing and high scores and it's over 20 years old!

Xaxsays...

Regarding Super Mario 64, "the now classic camera control"? The shitty camera control is why I hated it... innovative my ass. And I agree with Thylan; System Shock should be on that list.

Yes. Was there an earlier FPS/RPG hybrid that "did it right?" I don't think so.

"Look at you, Hacker."

Also, hopefully I won't be flamed for this or be labled as a fanboy, But I believe an honourable mention should be Halo.

The first one was the best, because it came out with a new twist, If i remember correctly, It was the first FPS to offer a re-chargable shield as well as health, that a lot of games since have just copied, or used something similar,
and where I agree that wolfenstein 3D was an awesome game, one of the points they made was that they added the minigun to the roster..

Which is true..

But its only there for the last level, so you can demolish the super-nazi.

However, your face when you pick it up is truly priceless.

I disagree as far as Halo is concerned. I'll admit the 'stay in the action' rechargable shield has been copied a lot within the FPS genre, but many of the things Halo did right such as integrated multiplayer and an innovative storyline had been done before in games like Unreal Tournament and Marathon.

I had hoped Super Mario Bros. would be higher on the list, as it more or less revived the home console industry. I also think text adventures should get a spot on the list with Zork I or ADVENT; sure UO basically birthed the MMORPG, but text adventures were the vibrant precursors to modern RPGs and the direct ancestors of all adventure games.

bamdrewsays...

No Duckhunt?! Blasphemy.

Seriously though, pretty okay list. They could have had Tony Hawk or Team Fortress or a lot of other games that the super-nerds would have loved to complain about... "so-and-so did that idea first!"... so good job on their part. I liked the inclusion of Body Harvest.

dannym3141says...

I'm STILL whinging about the sims.

But regarding halo, a rechargeable shield is simply an extra healthbar that regens itself.. so the innovation would be "regenerating health bars" which when put like that doesn't sound so innovative

gwiz665says...

Sims was not innovating, it is merely a non-hospital themed "Theme Hospital". Theme Hospital (now, Bullfrog was very, very innovative) is pretty much the same as the sims, but have different labels on the things you do.

Paybacksays...

Odd though, that they'd snuff GTA3 for a little known game, but allow Wolf3D to eclipse Catacombs3D and Ultima Underworld. Meh, not like it's CNN reporting but a bit of consistancy would be nice.

xxovercastxxsays...

Dare I say there was nothing innovative about Halo. It was just a really well done, well polished implementation of things that have been done before... like WoW.

I thought the same, that it's odd they'd point out Body Harvest but act like id's Hovertank 3D and Catacomb 3D had nothing to do with Wolfenstein 3D. Doom had more to do with the FPS explosion than any of them, anyway.

I'm not sure "The Sims" should be on here as much as the "Sims" should... SimEarth, SimCity, SimLife and The Sims. Mechanics of all of these will be coming together in Spore this year, and I think there's enough of a conceptual overlap to warrant grouping them together.

I think they should have titled this differently. This is really a list of the 10 most innovative and influential games. These games were not only innovative, but had a massive effect on the industry. System Shock, while unique and innovative, has not (for better or worse) changed the market.

rychansays...

Replace The Sims with Sim City and cut out something for Civilization and it's not bad.

The authors basically takes the stance that the most innovative games were the ones that define or mainstream genres. Seems reasonable. The genre's they touch upon are-

Platformer (mario)
3d platformer (mario)
3d Sandbox (rock star game)
Action RPG - Zelda
Real time strategy (Dune II)
First Person Shooter (wolf 3d)
Sim game (Sims, should have been Sim City)
Fighting game (Kung fu)
MMORPG - Ultima Online
arcade - Pong

I agree with their choices for the most part, I just don't agree with their choice of genre's. Seems a bit console or arcade biased. What about

Turn based strategy (Civilization, Heroes of Might and Magic)
RPG (Final Fantasy)

And one could argue that Quake was the most important FPS, not wolf 3d, because it was the first with significant online play and a really solid 3d world.

Ultima Underworld?

blankfistsays...

Holy shit! Yie Ar Kung Fu? I must've dumped three hundred dollars worth of quarters into that machine when I was young. That game was awesome. I freakin' hated that chick with the fans. Anyone else a fan of that game?

MarineGunrocksays...

I can't believe that Zelda was so far down the list.

And Halo? There was NOTHING innovative about that game. Oh, wait, did you mean shoving the player through endless hallway after endless hallway?

Fuck you, Halo. And fuck you too, XBOX fanboys for making that game more than it should have been.

lertadsays...

I'd have to agree with rychan, this list was compiled with "innovative" being "genre-defining" and how they shaped the industry.

A lot of suggestions of what should be on the list mentioned here simply include great new ideas for their own genre, but then if that criteria was chosen you'd see a bunch of Blizzard games here...there's a company that although don't define any great new frontier, always set the new standard for the genre with every new release.

It seems like a nightmareish eternity since I had a video on the top 15 (or a month to be more percise) and I have to say I'm suprised that this video is doing so well... Therefore I thank you all for your help and hope I get my first #1 ever... (Hopefully before the next punctuation review here is to hopeing)

As I stated before, This list that gametrailers posted is very arguable for many reasons, I admit that I expected Mario Bros be higher in the list but for it to be on the lower numbers, I was rather upset about this...

AnimalsForCrackerssays...

If you're going to give a number rank to the obvious choices of Wolf3d/Doom at least mention, as an aside, the original (especially innovative for it's time)System Shock and/or Marathon too fer chrissake!

I don't think Blizzard has ever innovated on anything. They've got 3 properties: WarCraft, Diablo and WarCraft 40K. I can't think of any original idea, even in my beloved StarCraft, that ever came out of that place. They just make other people's ideas really, really shiny, and then they charge a fortune for them.
