Top 10 FPS

As told by screw attack... If I had one complaint, is that #8 honestly should have been higher in the list...
budzossays...

This list is pretty dumb, but not just because of Doom 3.

Doom 3 is one of the best shooters ever, haters. For me it's one of the most immersive games of all time. Never had I been so convinced by the setting of a game. I had a blast playing through it and the expansion pack. It's supposed to be dark and hard to see stuff in DOOM. Plus the enemies' eyes glow if you actually stop bitching long enough to look carefully.. on my 30" monitor I could easily pick off enemies who were standing in the "dark".

I hate the multiplayer in COD4. It's too frenetic and the maps are so fake. Halo gets way too much credit and it definitely didn't "invent" teabagging. I was teabagging in Rainbow Six in early 1999...

I just tried to type out my own top 10, but it was too hard to pick the order and decide whether certain titles are distinct enough for their own entries (like the HL2 episodes..)

AnimalsForCrackerssays...

Deus Ex and System Shock 2 definitely belong on the list. They should put the console-based FPS and PC-based FPS in their own separate lists, I would surely agree with Goldeneye being number one for consoles in that case. PC FPSs would need at least 10 more spots so as not to exclude the sheer bulk of great games we've had over the years. ScrewAttack is very console centric so yeah not surprised.

BoneyDsays...

Doom 3 took its whole 'backstory' element from System Shock 2 (though not as well) and Bioshock was certainly nice, but not better than its predecessor. So how is that not on the list? Maybe they're going by sales figures here, as I know SS2 had/has more of a cult following than it did market impact.

Also Battlefield 2, to add to Marinara's list, which remains popular today.

RedSkysays...

Host was annoying.

The list seems to be stuck between telling you which FPSs are awesome for the moment compared to which are the classics. The lighting and mood-setting of Doom 3 was good, I admit that, but other games have done it as well or better. The actual gameplay style and much of what the host craps on about in terms of the gameplay elements was lifted virtually unchanged from the predecessors.

Sorry, if you're talking about FPSs, putting a game that bought FPS to consoles as number 1 makes no sense. FPSs have and will always play better with a mouse. You might be able to name a great console FPS that never made it to PC, but admit it, if it did make it to PC it would be much more hectic and fun to play if ported properly. I watch videos of people playing the same FPSs with gamepads that I have played on PC such as TF2 and CoD4, and the difference in pacing almost makes it look turn-based. Now, no doubt GoldenEye was a great game and deserves to be on the list but not number 1.

The original Half-Life has to be on there one way or another, even it means having both the first and second game somewhere on the list.

I would put Deus Ex on there as well but I guess it's a bit more cross-genre reminiscent of an RPG in terms of customization/genuine storyline direction choice.

They said it was Counter-Strike, but they had video of Counter-Strike Source. There's a difference, not to say CSS is necessarily bad on it's own, but the original CS is the hallmark classic that deserves the credit.

Halo's way too high. I agree it defined the original Xbox and yes, it populised the rechargable health system over garrish health packs but it stole much of the rest from far better games.

I can't quite grasp what makes people say CoD4 is so immersive. Is it because of the obsession with warfare and realism? Other games have created far more detailed, far more believable and captivating persistent worlds and that takes far more than creating a few admittedly believable urban landscapes, and tying them together with a paper-thin plot-line and immensely cliched story.

BenyBensays...

I think that Unreal tournament 2004 should've been in there at least. This game's multiplayer was so incredibly fun!

Granted those who like games with a bit more reality didn't like it, but so many people *did* like it.

Onslaught was so incredibly crazy. It's the most time I've spent online with a 3d shooter.

pho3n1xsays...

no Operation: Flashpoint ?

Half-Life2 needs to be much higher on the list.

agree that Deus Ex needs to be on the list.

stupid consoles. always hated GoldenEye due to turn speed. *shuffleshuffleshuffle* bang! oh he's gone

gwiz665says...

Wolf3D, Halo and Goldeneye don't belong on that list. The parameters for "best" needs to be clearer, otherwise it's just "I like this game, because I like it".

I would like to see a list of the most innovative FPS's.

wax66says...

Wow... I couldn't disagree more about SO many of the games on the list. GoldenEye #1? Are you on crack?!

My major argument would have to be the lack of Doom 2. There were SO many conversions, maps, sprite mods, etc out there for the game and, more importantly, it was the first, and still one of the few and proud, FPSes to throw a ridiculous number of monsters at you at once. Not having to render polys was a good thing for performance! It took until Serious Sam to be able to throw a similar number of fully 3d mobs at you at once.

I hate lists like this because the propose to be a Top 10 FPS's of all time, but it seemed like more than 1/2 of them were released in the last 4 years. I do have to give props for them at least including Duke3D and not completely ignoring common sense.

To me the Top 10 will always have to include innovation and an evolution in not only technology but gameplay as well.

So here are at least 8 that should have/were on the list:

Doom - As fun as Wolf3D was, Doom was funner. Besides, everything exploded after Doom.

Duke3D - For adding in crazy weapons, jumping, crouching, looking up/down, jetpacks, crazy locations, etc, etc.

Quake - For kickstarting polygonal, online deathmatch multiplayer goodness.

System Shock 2 - Bioshock was just SS2 in a new, pretty wrapper. SS2 added RPG like elements, a great story, etc.

Unreal Tournament - Taking multiplayer to the next step with customization and Bot AI that was just uncanny.

Half-Life - For creating a truly immersive world; it was like playing inside a $200 million dollar blockbuster movie, as opposed to just watching it. (Still my #1 video game of all time. Where the hell is Black Mesa Source already??? )

Deus Ex - For doing emergent gameplay right. Want to go in gun's blazin'? Check. Want to go stealthy? Check. Want to hack instead? Check. Want to switch back and forth among these different elements depending on what any given situation called for? Check.

Tribes/Battlefield 1942 (tie) - For taking online multiplayer outdoors and giving gamers vehicles to drive around in. I never got a chance to get into Tribes, but I do recognize innovators when I see them. I still remember the first day I loaded Wake Island (BF1942 demo); some of the best DM memories are still linked to that day.

Now with all that said, where is my Duke/Descent/Freespace/Battlefield/WoW/Deus Ex/Half-Life hybrid I've been waiting for??

9464says...

The host made this video unwatchable.. and Duke should have been first.

Back in 96/97, Quake 1 and 2 were fun as hell online.. Deathmatch, CTF and TF. With TCP/IP 1vs1 Duke matches with customizable RTS voices, never had that much fun.

I wish I had a Delorean to go back in time so that I can experience those great moments again.

Crosswordssays...

Made its because I played golden eye after having played quake II on a good sized LAN for awhile, but I wasn't impressed with it at all. Comparatively clunky controls, and nothing special in the graphics department, and lots of running around trying to find one other person on a map.

Truckchasesays...

Dumb. I'm not even going to get into the "should've beens", but as soon as he included Halo at all, I'm out.

There should be some sort of law preventing Johnny-come-latelys from making "of all time" lists. If he titled it "in my opinion" it would be less offensive.

coolhundsays...

What a load of horseshit.

No Tribes? (extremely innovative)
No Operation Flashpoint? (at least as innovative as Tribes)
No Doom 1/2?
No FEAR?
No System Shock 2?
No No One Lives Forever 1/2?
No Blood???

I hope his list was meant as sarcasm...
Else this guy is a perfect example why PC gaming is dieing...

Alaksays...

I think he just picked a list of games he liked and put them in a video. The list will vary from person to person based on what they think is the best.

I know I played the shit out of Jedi Knight, but I think I logged more hours on Tribes 2 than any other games I've played in recient years. Operation Flashpoint was a killer title for the realism lovers, which includes me.

Abel_Priscsays...

Couldn't disagree with this list more for several reasons.

For one, as described above, the top two games being consoles is a joke considering we're talking FPS here.

Halo... *sigh* I suppose it should be on the list, considering how absolutely huge it is. But that has nothing to do with it being a 'good' FPS. As a matter of fact, all three of them were incredibly mediocre. The ONLY reason the first one got as popular as it did was because the XBOX was marketed to the frat/casual player so much, that everyone who had no idea about video games HAD to have one. Then they all realized there weren't any games on the system. And that was right around the time Halo came out. With an unoriginal (PC players have been doing everything in Halo MP YEARS before the game released) but functional multiplayer (something the other XBOX titles lacked at the time), it got incredibly popular. This may seem over-simplified, but that's basically it. Worthy of #2? No way.

Doom 3 seems like the most controversial in the comments here and for good reason. Let's face it, whether you enjoyed Doom 3 or not, it was so over-shadowed by the Half-Life 2 hype, that people were ultimately unimpressed by the game. It was hilarious when they soon after released the expansion ripping off the gravity gun. But the fact is, the Doom franchise does belong on here though, just not 3.

Goldeneye was successful, yes. Fun when it came out? Yes. But #1 FPS EVER? Are you fucking kidding me? I'm not even sure it's worthy to be on this list, let alone BEST FPS EVER.

A lot of you are saying Deus Ex. Let me just say, I fucking LOVE Deus Ex. It was a blast, but let's face it- it's a cult classic. It definitely isn't something that's going to make a list such as this. Consolers haven't heard of it! And it's obvious this guy loves his consoles.

Oh, and where the hell is UT? You know, the game that pioneered (keep in mind I said pioneered, not created) the basic Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag style multiplayer?! Any PC FPS player old enough to remember the old games will have the fondest memories about the good old days playing the original UTs.

Out of all of the genres of video games, FPS are really the one that made the PC shine and stand out. To say the best FPS games weren't played with a keyboard and mouse is blasphemy.

AnimalsForCrackerssays...

I'm glad others are mentioning Tribes, a true innovator and a game which brought many of the conventions that are staples of the FPS genre today. I forgot to include that as I was mainly thinking about the single-player experience. If we're talking MP, Tribes all the way. I really wish more games these days would have the SP experience open to coop play too. Even though I'm not a huge fan of Halo I have to commend the series for that. Doom 2 coop (on Hardcore or Nightmare) back in the day was one of my favorites, along with dial-up games of C&C/Red Alert against teams of bots with my friend.

That's another thing, you'd have to even further segment the lists into singleplayer and multiplayer so we don't end up comparing apples to oranges. I think it's great how these games have evolved in different directions and how there's a lot of room for contention and something for everyone of a certain taste. Here's hoping we see or create some revolutionary things in the near future.
