things that go boom.

The liquid nitrogen is a bit silly. A large enough mass of either would overwhelm the other.

Thermite is easy to manufacture with very common materials. It's just Iron rust and Aluminum dust. It's very stable and safe to transport. It's so stable, in fact, that you need another kind of charge between the fuse and the thermite to escalate the reaction to something hot enough to set off the thermite. Thermite has been used in small quantities for welding since the 1860s, at least. It's unfortunate that half the entries on Youtube in a search for thermite are from 9/11 conspiracy theorists.

We performed the thermite reaction in high-school science class. Just a flower pot full of iron oxide and aluminum dust. We put a small divot in the top which we filled with potassium permanganate and triggered the reaction by pouring a bit of glycerin onto the permanganate. Quite a fireworks display!

This reminds of an article I read about this show earlier, apparently they are not above using conventional explosives to spice up the act

The canister clearly falls over; it is not melted. They don't show the engine having a hole through it. I don't buy the gasoline explosion; too soon.

I think they are meddling again.

Braniac is a bit too "we're so cool and smart" for my taste. I'll take mythbusters any day over this.

I could kill myself. I've seen this so many times, but I've never thought of submitting it.

This and the explosions were the only good thing about Brainiac. What a retarded show that was, nothing remotely brainy about it. And yes many explosions look really contrived, so that article doesn't come as a surprise.
Mythbusters should do a show about Brainiac

upvote because anyway something went boom in a nice way, and they took the piss out of peugeot.

I've never seen Brainiac, but it's a shame to hear they've faked their stuff. However I've been doing some research on thermite (how I found this clip, actually), and it burns at around 2500+ degrees, which is enough to melt through a car engine, concrete, asphalt, or just about anything you set it on. So if they're not doing the Irreversible Thermite Reaction for real...they may as well be.

PS, it's my first top 15 video! Thanks everybody!

BTW, topic title: Theremite is spelled thermite.
