The craze of bottled water is a national obsession but tap water is usually safer for you, and often better tasting too. Using a hidden camera, Penn & Teller will take a look at the obsession.

I'm glad to see this, but it is still a bit generalized. For instance, the variation in quality of municipal water from location to location can be pretty large.

Nevertheless, information like this video and the recent talk about how much waste is created in bottled production has me considering just going with a filter. Of course, filters, not maintained correctly, are more dangerous than not using them at all (contaminant buildup and overflow, bacteria growth within the filter). Worse, the way some of them are sold (e.g., Brita pitchers), they signal for replacement after a given amount of time, not volume purified, which is completely idiotic. With that method, if you use relatively little water, you're throwing money away. If you use a lot of water, you're using the filter far past its true effectiveness period. Ugh.

I usually agree with Penn and Teller, but this is stupid.
I only drink water. I do.. I don't like alchool, I don't like juices or sodas.. Nothing.
Just water!
I drink only spring water. Not because it's cleaner or something. I drink it because it doesn't taste like PIPE!.
I fucking hate pipe water, and maybe because I only drink water, I can detect the difference (and believe me, I DO).

viewer_999 is correct in that the water varies from city to city. However, most of the variation is in the taste. There are some exceptions, but overall, quality of the water is generally the same (at least in the lower 48 of the US.) I do know that I don't particularly care for the taste of tap water in the San Diego area, whereas LA and San Fransisco taste fine. In fact, when I'm in the area, I have no qualms about drinking water straight from the tap.

Brita filter. That's all you need. And I love Penn & Teller.

NEW YORK -

The label on Aquafina water bottles will soon be changed to spell out that the drink comes from the same source as tap water, the brand's owner said Friday.

Well, my tap water is white, not clear, and has the occasional black speck floating around. No thanks. I only drink tap water in most counties, though.

I drink bottled water for the convenience, not the faggotry. Tesco value water serves my purposes well at 17p for 2 litres.

I also drink practically nothing but water and what they dont mention is the temperature. Sure warm tap water is nasty but warm bottled water isnt that great either. If you serve it cold there is virtually no difference. I have had gallons upon gallons of tap water from the 6 different states I have lived in (one of them was well water) and there is no fucking difference and i saved a ton o' money. So I agree with them, we bitch and moan about gas prices when we pay more for bottled water, WATER, something that is practically free in every home. Its like having your own gas pump at home that you paid a small tax on but still going to Exxon to buy the Premium because your pump only has unleaded.

I get drinking water from a local water store, where it is sold for 25 cents per gallon. Not exactly the same realm as gas prices. Water stores like the one near me have all their filtration equipment on display behind the counter, and since their livelihood depends on keeping the filters clean, you can usually trust them. There are also some good filtered water dispensers in front of supermarkets that use a more compact filtration system. These places start with municipal water, then filter for the crap that gets dumped in "for our health", like chlorine and fluoride, or whatever leftover hazardous chemicals can get pushed through congress this week.

But in the end, it really comes down to what tastes better. And believe me, I wouldn't have bothered finding out all this information in the first place if LA water didn't taste like concrete.

I love hearing people's justification for their own decisions. It's the convenience! Coz nothing's more convenient that going to the shop to buy water to drink.

We mistrust the Government, but we happily place our trust in companies we know are trying to screw us, and that are supervised by... the Government!
