>> ^blankfist: Where does the Onion make its money? Only advertising revenue? How can they afford to give away so much quality free shit?!
Apparently yeah, almost all from advertising revenue. See: http://mediakit.theonion.com/index.html and check out the links at the top of the page. They've got print ads, online ads, email ads, even cell phone ads for sale.
Looks like they're spending the money well: these news spoofs are just so dead-on.
What I like to do is talk about politics as if I actually care, even engaging in a frantic debate full of O'Reilly-like tirades, until election day. Then I sit at home and watch my Simpsons DVDs. The next day I re-emerge, ready to debate about whichever douchebag just won whatever election was being held in some place like Nebraska's third district.
Not only is the production excellent, but the text overlays are hilarious too: "Did you know animals cannot vote?" "Barack Obama (Bar-ock Oh-bah-muh): The Black One"
They make a lot of revenue from the paper as well.
What surprises me is that I just saw the Onion movie and compared to the brief spots on its website it just wasn't very funny. There were funny parts but I was expecting this level of parody for 90 minutes and I was totally let down. Apparently this is the kind of comedy that should be kept short.

Vote NO on corn subsidies for minority farmers!
How can a fake news network make a professional looking show when the local TV station can't?
Why don't you ask the Fox News Channel how they do it?
