The Man Who Never Slept - Fatal Familial Insomnia

[9:54] This is part of a special called "Secrets of Sleep". The patient in this video didn't sleep for 6 months because of fatal familial insomnia.

"...Death usually occurs between 7 and 36 months from onset. The presentation of the disease varies considerably from person to person, even among patients from within the same family.

The disease has four stages, taking 7 to 18 months to run its course:

1. The patient suffers increasing insomnia, resulting in panic attacks, paranoia, and phobias. This stage lasts for about four months.
2. Hallucinations and panic attacks become noticeable, continuing for about five months.
3. Complete inability to sleep is followed by rapid loss of weight. This lasts for about three months.
4. Dementia, during which the patient becomes unresponsive or mute over the course of six months. This is the final progression of the disease, and the patient will subsequently die." - wiki

I'm not sure why they're so desperate to find the father's other children. They need to be tested? Why? So they can all worry about whether or not they're going to die when they're 40? They can't be helped; let them live in peace.

I don't quite agree with the earlier comment posted on here - you can either face your problems or simply turn and run away from them. I'm sure that, even if science can't yet cure this disease, at least knowing about it firsthand will give the patient some better treatment which they wouldn't otherwise have if not properly diagnosed. This is just my opinion though - I don't know nothing about it, and have absolutely no idea what it would be like.

But anyways, has somebody found a full version of this interesting documentary in English? All I find are dubbed in other languages I can't grasp!
