The I-35 Highway is .. God's Highway?

Don't watch this video unless you've got an awesome tolerance for high-density super-concentrated stupid and dancing howling raving demented [beeeeep]. This is America, land of prophecies, dreams, and visions taken as insight, where imaginary demons and angels are supposedly fighting over a strip of pavement.

for anyone who doesn't understand how fundementalist Islamic movements can take over entire nations... we got a pretty good analogous example right here in our own backyard...

but anyway, all that and my upvote aside, I think your description for this is rather... er, rude and inflammatory, and unless you are actually trawling for a flame war, I'd suggest that you change it... I mean, I don't think you actually need to call these people 'fuckwits', that's kind of low.

The description is taken from Pharyngula (http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/), and to be honest, I thought it was a bit over-the-top myself, but so is the video, so I think it evens out pretty much. Besides, its funny. Also, you wouldnt normally hear "This is America.."-type comments from me, But again, since this is a quote, from an American, I thought I'd let it pass.

Living in the biblebelt m'self, these folks they are interviewing, are the worst kinds of zealots-firstly, most of the folks from full-gospel churches (church of god, pentecostal, and offshoots of "where do we put all the bi-polar and developmentally disabled Christains...(as they are, a stubborn tarnish on the good name of Hay-zeus) are whackjobs with issues. If they we're not devout about Jesus, they'd need sports or drugs or some other sort of reprieve from their inner dialog..... fundamentalism, cult of personality, same difference-it is a group activity for burn-outs or imprint-afflicted, be they followers of programming from Kim Jung Il, from some imam, or blows to the head. Any tunnel reality is!! Ya hear that ya rabid stamp collectors and Trekkie freaks???!!! YER SICK!!! Get out more, interact with birds and bugs or something...AAAUAUAAUGAHHH!

met like 3 Christians in my whole life, that's cause' the real ones don't go around doing shit like this-

"Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward....
"And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
"But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly."
Matt:6:2,5-6

God says, "Shut the fuck up!"

lol... 17 24-hr. wishing prayer rooms for 35 days. The end is near ZOMG!!!! People that believe in religion are loons! Pure conspiracy drilled into their heads... hey, if many ppl are told this stuff from birth over and over again, and put the fear of Hell into them, then yeah there will be plenty of addicts that need massive doses of prozak to cope with this madness. I-35 - God has a highway.. and it's right here in America.. imagine that.. but you might need some seer stones to see Jesus walking down it.

I think it's a major stretch to claim that is the "highway" spoken of in Isaiah. Huge stretch. The verse is grossly taken out of the context of the surrounding verses which in reference to a time we have certainly not reached yet. Anyway, American Christians are obsessed with fitting America into the End-times prophecies. I don't see any real important place for America in it all. Maybe some indirect this or that. It's especially the mega-churches that are heading it up. They get a little too caught up in group-think pretty often.

I don't think this is the best approach, these "sieges" as they call them. But they did succeed helping a few people. Of course the anti-theists in this crowd will say the opposite. heh.

On Choggie's verses, these were targeted at people who act righteous and all high-and-mighty and such for the sole purpose of being seen and thought better of for it. It refers to people who pray loudly in the temple so others will revere them for their ardent righteousness. That also goes for people who give to charities only to be seen giving and to therefore be praised for it. That becomes just ego and pride.
The verses don't apply to evangelism and certainly not to [some at least] of these folks who are plainly not going to get "glory" from those who see them. If anything they'll get the same flack their receiving in the comments here. They'll get called loons and idiots. Not exactly a pride booster.

And Ryjkyj, do you think the man was lying?

Other than an obvious mis-interpretation of prophecy, I don't see them as "ignorant" as you claim in the tags. Passionate for sure, and certainly not in agreement with your philosophy, but to what are they ignorant exactly?

I know I might be asking for flames here being 1 of the 3 talking Christians on the sift, but I thought I'd comment anyway.

yeah Doc-M, perhaps teh comparison with Pharasies did not fit into the scheme of interpreting Jesus' entreat, to "go ye into all the world, and preach it"...I probably should have used the story of the guy who said he was LEGIONS, and shortly thereafter was his group of demons sent into the herd of pigs.

The point here, is that these so-called Christians, flabbering in tongues calling it the outpouring of the holy spirit....laying hands and "healing", again, whatever they think is healing, etc etc....this brand of Christian is the type of person who, without the love and association of friends, family, or group, end up being energy vampires and perhaps, homeless and delusional, in later years, off their meds. We can only hope they will hermitize themselves, in a place like Utah, the badlands...nah, too pretty there....send em all to Detroit, and build a wall around the city like in "Escape From", and let em wait for Gee-Whiz to take em back......and fix em!

Doc_Msays...

hehe. I'll agree with most of that though not so extremely. I don't think they are as mentally ill as they are addicted to the emotion and excitement of it all. In the words of a band I briefly liked a while back "Youth-camp junkies don't get enough to make the buzz last." Pentacostals concentrate too much on how they feel and what they dream, and not enough on what God Himself told them.

BicycleRepairMansays...

but to what are they ignorant exactly?

It is perhaps more fitting to ask what they are NOT ignorant about.. They are even ignorant about the bible, in many ways, which is pretty disturbing since it seems to be their only field of interest.

Nevertheless, to answer you question: The rest of the world, literally, and philosophically.

Also, the ignorance tag was not just directed at these peoples own ignorance, but their fervent efforts to spread ignorance to the rest of the world, by means of what they think is enlightenment, namely to lull people into some frantic, hypnotic Jesus-fantasy.

Doc_Msays...

Misinterpretation is not ignorance. The bible is extraordinarily complicated. It is not easy to misunderstand some things, especially in prophetic texts.
As for the world.
Based on your understanding of the world, they're ignorant.
Based on their understanding of the world, you are.

In terms of ignorance Doc I think BPM is going on more than just this video for his conclusion. These are the same people who wish death upon gays, now the video only briefly touched on god healing "gayness" but I guess the idea of these people being ignorant to their own ideal is they keep prasing Jesus, spreading Jesus, loving Jesus, and yet Jesus not once (to my knowlege) in the bible called for the death or cleansing of gays or really condemed them as evil and should be wiped out. If he did then he kind of contridicts his "dont judge" sort of ideology (imagine that, the bible with a contridiction). So in that way a misrepresentation that so distorts the original views is either ill informed (ignorant) or has its own agenda (manipulative). In terms of seeing us a ignorant, of course they do when others dont agree with them, which is flawed logic. I dont look upon people who dont agree with me as ignorant, but they automatically do. I have talked to very well informed ministers and priests who's knowledge was greater than mine in some areas. Are they ignorant, no, and though I still dont agree with them I can say that because they are informed on the topics of their church and book, and didnt judge me

BicycleRepairMansays...

Based on their understanding of the world, you are.

I'm sure I am, but ignorance is not completely relative the way I see it. I see these peoples beliefs and I think of the people in Sudan, who thinks children who loses their parents must be witches. Look, in order to claim your local highway is somehow "Gods way" you simply NEED to be ignorant about history, philosophy, biology, astronomy, engineering, transportation or whatever.

Put another way, I'm willing to bet that I know more about the bible than they know of any field of knowledge outside the bible. I probably couldnt beat them on their "homefield", the bible, but I'm pretty sure that in overall knowledge, I would be seen as "less ignorant" by any 3rd party observer. And I'm no oracle here, I think of myself as knowing no more than what you'd expect of a normal person living in the 21st century.

The thing is, these people live in a trancelike state of willful ignorance, perhaps a better word would be "Ignore" as thats what they seem to do with everything in the outside world.

At any rate, I stand by my claim that these people are spreading ignorance, which to me is a lot worse than imposing it on yourself.

Doc_Msays...

"These are the same people who wish death upon gays..."
Actually, that's incorrect. This is an entirely different group of people. The opinions of the Westboro cult of a church are not supported by the vast majority of even very evangelical and even very fundamental Christians. It is not biblical to say God hates any person. Some churches and ministers are concentrating on homosexuality now because it is such a hot topic in today's politics and law. They were the same way with porn a bit ago.

"I don't look upon people who don't agree with me as ignorant, but they automatically do."
That's good, but I don't think these people would call you ignorant "automatically." No where in the video does it say that. And I don't think most people are that obtuse. I only said it the way I did to point out the relativeness of BRM's statement.

Anyway, I still think these folks are wrong about the Highway. It is not in context.

Anyway, being Christian doesn't mean you're stupid or ignorant. See:
http://www.adherents.com/people/100_Nobel.html
for example.
