Terminal Insomnia; if I have it, do I want to know?

Prion (proteinaceous infectious particle) diseases include "mad cow" disease and other spongiform encephalopathies, the most common human form being Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Prions are not destroyed by typical sterilization techniques. Fatal familial insomnia is an unusual variant. Substitution of a single base pair results in a familial prion (not infectious)that causes the unlucky host to never sleep again. The dilemma faced by every potential carrier of genetic disease; do I get tested? do I really want to know?
