Tchaikovsky - Fortune and Tragedy (Episode 2)

Conductor Charles Hazlewood presents the second and concluding part of Tchaikovsky, a stunning drama documentary on the life of the great composer. We join Tchaikovsky as he makes the disastrous decision to get married, a union that lasted barely three months and threw him into emotional turmoil. This was followed with a passionate affair with Joseph Kotek for whom he wrote the Violin Concerto.

We follow his rise up the echelons of Russian society, which coincided with increased personal angst, and the programme concludes with his much debated death - was it cholera or suicide? Ed Stoppard plays the title role of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, along with a talented young British cast.

Charles Hazlewood conducts the Maryinsky Young Philharmonic on location in St. Petersburg through key works by the composer including highlights from the 1812 Overture, The Sleeping Beauty and Sixth Symphony "The Pathetique". They are joined by talented young Russian Sasha Sitkovetsky who performs Tchaikovsky's celebrated Violin Concerto.
