conansays...

1) I've said it more than once and i'll have to say it again: Fox News. It really is shocking to me. I'm not joking, not exaggerating. I simply cannot understand that there is a network with this popularity on one side and this absolute lack of any real content besides propaganda. I always question my picture of the US when i see clips of Fox News. Come on, this is not some 2nd or 3rd world dictatorship with controlled mass media only there to stupify the people. Is it really a network one should take seriously? I cannot imagine that bullshit being aired 24/7 over here. No, not because i'm so deluded as to believe that folks over here are smarter or whatever. Just because i am convinced that no one would take a network like this seriously. Everyone would see it as something like TDS. I honestly believe that Fox News is the one most horrible, stupid, redundant thing i have ever seen on any TV. Sometimes i wish i'd speak english as native language so i could present my opinon in an elaborated way, but since i'm only babbling english i just have to stick to: WTF is it with Fox News?

2) Stop this propaganda about the healthcare! Anyone actually believes this GOP / lobby BS? Have you ever EVER looked around you? No, not your friendly neighbor state, there are other countries in the world you know. And behold! the industrialized ones of them have decent healtcare, some of them especially in Europe (France, Germany, Nordics) even got fantastic systems. And no, we're not socialists and no we don't pay 3000$ a month and yes kids get free healthcare and yes it actually works! It has worked for decades. So please STFU, sit together and develop a system for your own country. It' doable.

3) Anyone else feels the way about too much analogies than i do? At a certain point it crosses my mind that the person speaking thinks of my as stupid. "...like a red pill and a blue pill". NO! No Mr President! The healthcare system is NOT like some stupid pills you saw in a third-class sci-fi flick. It is complex, complicated and yes 99% of people will not be able to completely understand it. And no it has nothing todo with your neighbor's car deal. Your people isn't stupid. It's ok to talk like this when you're talking to kids. But this isn't child's play, it's the future of your country and your healthcare.

...ah thanks, i'm feeling much better now :-)

@conan

On point 2.

I lived in Sweden for 2 years. Now, granted this was 15 years ago but the experience I had with socialized medicine was always very positive. I went to the doctor or dentist when I needed. Never waited, just scheduled an apointment and went, no different than I currently do in the US. My mother in law in Sweden recently was diagnosed with a serious condition and was in surgery 3 days later.

It's appalling how so many people in my country fall for the obnoxious propoganda that's shoveled at them. Socialized medicine CAN work and in my experience it benefits your entire society. As long as we continue to throw disingenuous political BS around we'll never be able to treat the issue seriously enough to make it work. Of course, that's obviously what some segment of our population wants. Failure.

It's clear to me he's referring to fact that doctors often prescribe expensive proprietary drugs when a generic would work just as well. Which is a valid point when you're talking about keeping costs down.

But he should say that directly for the sake of people who will think he's making some nonsensical allusion to a sci-fi movie alluding to a psychedelic children's book.

Regarding drug costs, is generic substitution on the table for healthcare reform in the US?

Some interesting stats from Finland:
http://www.kela.fi/in/internet/english.nsf/NET/280208161649PN?OpenDocument

From the stats of 2007, direct savings from generic substitution for consumer and health insurance provider combined were 35.6 million Euro, and total costs of prescription drugs were 1,626.8 million euro. The article linked states that during the first year after generic substitution was put into law, a cost reduction of 90 million euro was observed, of which two thirds are estimated to have resulted from increased competition among pharma companies, and one third from actual substitutions.

Blah blah Fox News

It's fine to rant about Fox News. They are slanted right. However, I don't see you being equally outraged at the fact that NBC, CBS, ABC, PBS, CNN, and just about every other so-called 'news' agency on the planet is slanted left. You can't whine about 'propoganda' from FOX and then go on to smugly pretend that everything else is just hunky-dory. The success of FOX news exists because it fills a HUGE gaping hole in the 'propoganda news' marketplace. As the only news agency that slants conservative, it appeals to a huge market. If you're a neo-lib, then you've got about 10,000 other news programs competing for your attention.

But all news is propoganda today. The neo-liberal left wing news media dominates the cycles. For people to get so excised about the existence of ONE alternative news channel that communicates the other side of the story seems to me to show a high degree of insecurity.

Blah blah propoganda on health care

So far I see no propoganda. I see a different opinion on how to solve our health care cost issues. Obama wants socialism. Other people disagree. That's 'propoganda'? Oh - I see - it's propoganda because they are 'slanting' the way they communicate? Oh... How awful. How could anyone (COUGH COUGH OBAMA) do such a horrible thing as to exaggerate the negatives of what they oppose while communicating only the positives about their own plan? What a dastardly approach! :eyeroll:

Obama's plan isn't the only solution. There are strong arguments against a socialized system. America is NOT a small European country. It is much more highly populated, much more geographically fragmented, and far more demographically complicated. What works in Po-Dunk'sVille Eurozakistan will not necessarily work here. Obama's plan should not be implemented hastily. It should be rolled out SMALL in one or two test markets. Then if it actually works (as determined by the CBO) then it can be rolled out in a large market or two to see if it works there. Then we'll learn about what does and doesn't work, and what issues to be aware of. Then (IF it works according to CBO) ONLY then should be pass a 'law' making it a national plan. There is no need to pass this massive change now now now with no testing, no plan, no discussion, no transparency, and no testing to verify its capacity for success. Executing a plan this large purely on 'theory' is a terrible idea. Slow down.

There is no viable left wing in this country. Whatever existed was wiped out in the 1930s.

The right wing is quickly making themselves as liable; with very similar talks of revolution and violence they sound like anarchists.

In any other country in the world, NBC et al would be labeled right-leaning. For some reason, in the USA, "right of center"="rabid communist".

I guess it depends on what you mean by 'left wing'. But can you honestly look Obama, Pelosi, Ried, Kennedy, ACORN, Daily Kos, and all the other myriad special interest groups that comprises the modern neo-lib movement and call them anything but 'left wing'? Only people who are thoroughly biased towards the left would see such groups and consider them 'centrist'.
