Strike Out and Home Run All on the Same Pitch

What a messed up play! The pitcher throws a strikeout but gets charged with an earned home run while the batter gets a called third strike but gets the home run.

It would be recorded as a strikeout but the catcher didn't catch the ball clean. If he had it would have been an out and that would've been the end of the inning, but since the catcher forgot to tag the runner it's still a live ball.

The pitcher doesn't get charged with a HR against his stats. The play is also not scored as a HR. It is scored as a dropped-third-strike with a three-base fielder's choice, with said fielder being the catcher, I suppose, although it's at the scorekeeper's discretion. The inning, however, does continue.

Blimey, I wish I hadn't read those explanations. Think I'll stick to footie.

Usually it's the batter who forgets to run on a dropped third strike. I don't think I've heard of a catcher neglecting to try to tag the batter. That catcher dropped the ball more than once on that occasion.

I just tried to read my explanation substituting similar cricket terminology and I can understand your confusion, Deano. I make no sense at all!

This obscure rule came up with me when I was in little league in the 6th grade. Nobody bothered to tell me about the rule, so when the catcher dropped the pitch and everyone was yelling at me in an unintelligible, cacophonous din to run I had no idea what the hell they were talking about. He eventually tagged me out as I stood there dumbfounded. After an entire depressing year of not hitting any pitch in a game except for one fly out, despite being amazing in practice, I think this was the point when I broke down and cried. Of course, I never signed up for baseball again, and it cemented me into my geek lifestyle.

Hahahaha thank you for sharing Sketch, I hope that exercise in abreaction was as cathartic for you as it was entertaining for me.

I knew baseball was boring, but it's dumb too!? Neat!

In a Japanese college baseball game, it figures that the Tokai player would outsmart the entire opposing team.

I'm sure no one will ever see this comment, but there is no dropped third strike if there is a runner on first. I was a catcher for many years and if there's a man on first base, it doesn't matter if the ball rolls into the dugout, it's an out and there is no play to first.
