The best part of A New Hope by far. This is probably the only major battle in the Star Wars saga that isn't cut away from or cut to during the movie. Just ten uninterrupted minutes of action.

Second Part: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xIpjgF6SWiU&feature=related

Maybe it's the tiny, jumpy low frame rate youtube screen, but is this movie finally starting to show it's age a mere quarter century later? Naaah.

I almost downvoted this because it is the clip that Lucas bastardized. Not with the new special effects, but if you remember from the original, right after Biggs says the line "I'm going to cut across the axis and try to draw there fire...", the X-Wings plunge down to the surface while John Williams' score erupts to life. I got shivers down my spine in the theater and every time watching that scene in later years on video. Then Lucas fucked it all up by approving the increased engine whine of the X-Wings, drowning out the music. Unfortunately I can't find a clip of the original for comparison, but trust me, it blows that he made that change. As well as the other audio blunders (Tarkin's scene with Leia) that were in A New Hope, version 3.0
I used to stick up for Lucas as he sank a majority of his money into ILM after Star Wars and each successive SW film; he really is the father of modern special effects you see today. But post-1998, he is a cash whore, no doubt about it.

I remember the lines stretching around the theaters when this came out. It is the only movie that I ever saw in a sold-out house, other than "Sicko". I think I was about 13 or 14 at the time. Man, the crowd went wild when that star blew up.

I'm with videosiftbannedme on this one. This scene is just one of the many many reasons that the special editions are so terrible. I honestly get upset when I think about what George Lucas did to the original trilogy, and the way that he likes to act like the real original trilogy never existed, or was some kind of glorified rough cut. I also seriously resent the fact that he's constantly touting himself as the main creative guy behind all the films, when he didn't write or direct Empire or Jedi. Of course he has to perpetuate this misconception, otherwise what gives him the right to screw with those films? Of course he owns them, so he can shit all over them to his heart's content, but that doesn't make it right. Blech.

The thumb looks like the X-Wing is flying over water instead of the Death Star. Man, I own so many copies of SW it's not even funny. I own the original VHS trilogy set (4:3) that cost my parents 80 bucks back in the day, and I own the original VHS widescreen trilogy set I bought on my own, and I own the Special Edition nightmare widescreen trilogy I bought begrudgingly, and lastly I just recently bought the trilogy again with the dual Special Edition & Original edition on DVD. Now that I own an HD-DVD player I'm sure I'll buy them again on HD-DVD Discs. Damn you technology!!! GRRR!

What I won't do for childhood memories. For those that care, I refuse to watch the special edition movies anymore. I also punch myself in the nuts whenever I watch the new trilogy. As a sadist bonus, I pull pubes from my ass crack whenever Jar Jar appears on screen. Man, my anus is bald after receutting the new trilogy into a single movie.

I think the single worst change to the trilogy is adding a scream when Luke falls down the air shaft in cloud city, after learning Vader is his father. Not very jedi-like, even if his training is incomplete. Hey George, why not just have him scream "oohhhhh shit!" while you're at it? When I saw it in the theatre in 1997 I hadn't seen Empire since it was on Pay TV in like 1987, and that scream jumped out at me and made me laugh.

Was it just me or was anyone else expecting Vader to tune in the radio as he launched his TIE fighter at +3:50 ?

@blankfist: make digital backups of those original tapes!

I remember seeing the midnight opening of this, then after the movie driving home in my clunky nissan wagon, weaving and swerving over all 6 lanes of the empty freeway pretending i was piloting the Millenium Falcon! Glorious!

What kind of idiot pilot would set their deflectors to double front while passing stationary pivoting turrets, and KEEP them double front when tie fighters are on your rear allowing for one shot one kills from the back?

I saw 'A New Hope' as a seven-year old, in 1977; the biggest summer of Hype ever, with a carload of my friends. My buddy's Dad said we had to see this movie, and took us all one Saturday. The rest of the summer we built crazy Lego and swung from ropes in trees with swords. Utterly blew our little minds.

wait.. hasn't this been edited just a little? Isn't there a part where they ask the Tarkin that they've analyzed the attack and it does pose a danger and Tarkin replies with something like, "What? In our moment of triumph?"
