Shepard Smith Calls Out "Frightening" FOX E-mailers

You know it's gotten pretty bad when even the anchors at FOX News are getting scared by the hate-filled emails from their loyal viewers. Welcome to the real world, Shepard. It's one your News Corporation helped to create.

Interesting. I'm glad that they see how appalling it is, but seriously, "feeding each other the same bunch of fact...of of hate that's not based in fact"? Do they not watch their own network? Maybe they should call out Beck or O'Reilly on their own particular brand of hate. <Edit> Oops. rougy beat me to the post, sorry.

I'm beginning to think that Shep is the only guy on Fox who even has a conscience. He seems to be listening to it a lot more recently, and that's not a bad thing. I just hope ol' Rupert or one of his lackeys don't smack him down for it.

An email from a red state, no doubt, where love for Jesus is high and IQ's are low.

Don't be so sure about that...that's the same type of mumbo jumbo that's touted every day in my office in the very very blue state of California. I think there's plenty of room to criticize Obama but a lot of people just vomit the same rhetoric that was on Fox the night before.

Winstonfield_Pennypackersays...

Perfect argument for the closing of all fox news broadcast stations nationwide.

Aaaaand a pretty good reason to shut down a few other places as well. Just a few examples... PBS, NBC, CBS, ABC, MSNBC, VideoSift comments, the Internet in general, NY Times, ChicagoST, talk radio, and personal communications.

Grow up. "News" (used loosely) channels on all sides have comments from viewers that are filled with the most sickening, outlandish tripe. This is not some sort of FOX exclusive. Is it distasteful? Sure. Cause to 'close' free speech? Hardly.

But I guess neolibs only care about such things when the issues don't favor them... Typical. Pettty and typical

I think it's sweet that Shep took the time to read Quantumushroom's email on the air.

I bet emails are a refreshing change from the hate mail they typically get, it's so hard to read incoherent rantings scribbled in crayon.

Nithernsays...

Exactly what is considered '...typical, pettty and typical', Winstonfield? Other then, petty being spelled with three t's?

The majority of posters on videosift seem to regard Fox News as non-journalistic and non-professional (including myself). This video is nothing new. What is new, is they are admitting the sort of individuals who email. The ones that are very hateful, vengeful, and psychopathic. The ones who could make Oklahoma City Bombing a cherry bomb in comparison. Fox News, has been goading on this sort of individuals since before GWB was president.

Now, they are seeing the effects up close and personal. Well, to bad, they now have to endure all the nightmares and know, they bare responsibility. Whether they can admit it or not, is none of our concern. If they decided to be journalists and professional newcasters, a long time ago, this stuff could have been mitigated. But, this is Fox News 'people without responsiblity....but demand everyone else be FULLY accountable to their actions'.

I get the feeling Mr. Smith has been considering leaving FOX. First he went balistic about the torture issue, and now this. Every day he see's the pundits and ideologs on his network get more and more fanatical. He see's the 'leaders' of the party get more and more radical and hard-core. He see's the republican party falling apart from within, with little more than the most hard core and radical conservatives remaining.

I can see it happening already. I really think it would have happened already but for the troubling economy. But I wouldn't be surprised that as the GOP gets more hardcore and his fellow FOX pundits get more and more radical and loose more and more viewers, he'll be 'shopping around' for another job soon.

It has happened before, with pundits and broadcasters leaving FOX news and taking on jobs at CNN.

And do you hold the same opinion of CNN? MSNBC? ABC News? CBS? The AP? Newswire? Newsweek? TIME? The point I'm making is that FOX is not alone here. Every "news" agency today is overflowing with the exact same level of hate, vitriol, slime, bias, and lack of professionality. Why are you cheering a vid that wants FOX to tone it down, while at the exact same time you guys cheer at the EXACT same stuff when it comes from Olberman, or Maddow, or all the other guys that are 'stoking' hatred?

All during the Bush presidency the same stuff was coming from the neolibs and the other liberal news sites. It was angry, it was bitter, it was hateful, it was vile, it was coarse, it was despicable. And yet, that stuff gets top votes on the Sift. Why is that? The only possible explanation is that you guys are bunch of flaming hypocrites. In one breat you want to shut down Fox news for being jersk. In the other you are giving a BJ to other news channels for doing the same thing.

Pathetic. Typical, and pathetic.

KnivesOutsays...

It's because Fox news sucks WP. In comparison, the other news sources don't seem to suck as much.

Fox News was the mouth-piece of an administration for 8 years, they read the talking points directly from White-house stationary. Now they are accusing every over news source of doing the same thing. Do you not see the hyprocisy in this?

Damn, it's not that hard to figure this out. You're apparently the one who is blinded by your own bias.

Yes, heaven forbid we prohibit or curb conservative hate speech.

If not for that, what else would you have to offer?

Winstonfield_Pennypackersays...

I suggest that is because you aren't looking at them critically because you like what they are saying and so you've chosen to put your blinders on. Since Fox's bias is one you DISlike then you are hyper-sensitive to it, and you choose at that point to take the blinders off.

Thankfully, I'm not party affiliated and so I'm not a stooge. I vote on an issue by issue basis where I'm staunchly conservative on fiscal issues, and tilt left on social ones. I heartily condemn Fox News for crappy reporting and airing the opinions of sleazeballs. I have no problem with calling Fox trash. But I can also say MSNBC, et al are also trash. If there are those who can't bring themselves to admit there is trash on both sides, then exactly who is the slave to bias?

Go to any news site you want and peruse the comments on a hot button story. Neolibs are not erudite intellectuals politely lamenting philosophical differences they oppose. They are cruel, foul mouthed ideologues spouting some of the meanest filth it has been my misfortune to encounter. Take Palin... Neolibs on MSNBC are currently making jokes about raping her daughters thanks to Letterman. Classy stuff, eh wot? By comparison, calling Obama by his middle name 'Hussain' and saying he's a socialist is pretty tame isn't it?

Shepherd put his finger right on it. The problem is the terrible 'us vs them' bias in the AUDIENCE. It isn't the news channel's fault per se (though they shamelessly profit from it). The problem is the mouth-breathers cheering the news channels from both sides.

When you only call one side of the debate to the carpet, but give the other side cheers, ratings, and money - what kind of lesson do you think the news guys take from that? They got your message neolibs and neocons... Sleaze and bias sells. BraVO! (golfclap) If you don't like it, then next time don't put up with it from YOUR team... You can't create an environment of bias and anger, and then get all upset when the team you don't like does the same thing right back at you. Unless you're me, because I have no team.

Seems like this guy got lost on the way to his job one day and has been working at Fox ever since. What the hell is he doing there? Get some right-wing nut-case in his chair and make room for this guy over at MSNBC already!

Any bias is bad in the news (ideally). I dont think that it's just that I don't disagree with the bias, just that it's SO BLATANT.

Observation: Some cruel, foul-mouthed people on internet message boards promote neolib policies.
Conclusion: Neolibs are cruel, foul-mouthed people.

Perfectly rational generalization.

EXACTLY!
the fourth estate is a failed institution, brought to all of us in part by the machinations of one michael powell, head of the FCC in 1993,and media conglomerates wanting to monopolize ALL media.
ruper murdoch is only ONE in a small group of FIVE that own ALL of american media.
that is one mighty big bullhorn, one which i choose to not listen to.

what i find ironic in mr pennypackers comments is this:
he states that he does not buy into the polemic(us vs them)and then uses a POLEMIC to make his case against the so-called "neo-libs"(really mr pennypacker, look the definition up please)on videosift.
hypocrisy? you betcha...

i do wholeheartedly agree that there is an US vs THEM,but not in the way the corporate media likes to portray it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conservative
on one side,and
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classical_liberalism
on the other.
this is a media created polemic,a falsely created juxtposition that does not have the inherent divisiveness that we have been forced to accept over the years.
the real US is the average person, doing there best to survive in a seemingly more volatile world.most of US dont have time to vette every story we see on the news.this is a basic fundamental question of trust:do we "trust" corporate news?
answer:no..we dont.they as an institution have failed to instill the necessary ingredients for trust.at one time they did,but in the late 70's news went from "non-profit" to "profit",and since we have seen a devolution of news quality and veracity.thats why we see 24 hr coverage of anna nicoles death and not more pertinent news pieces.we are partly to blame for this digression.
THEM are those who seek to gain profit and political influence by manipulating the masses.FOX news is the most egregious benefactors of this type of malfeasance, led by one rupert murdoch.while not alone in media machinations, they are by far the worst offenders.

whenever i see comments about corporate media i think of this short video,if you have not seen,or read noam chomsky's "manufacturing consent" watch this vid.it states quite well my thoughts:
http://www.videosift.com/video/Noam-Chomsky-on-Freedom-and-Future
thank you and good night
