A documentary about The Netherlands, and the ways in which it deals with personal liberties. It was made in 1994. I'm ashamed to say by now we are going the American way, meaning downhill regarding freedoms. I grew up with these liberties, and it is a shame to see our country going back to the 50's: Christian Conservativism.

people see all this cool stuff but the dutch government seems to be hard core conservative. vary white is right. they have like one black in office. what pissed me off was when the dutch government officially sided with the newspaper that published the comic strip that angered so many Muslims. that would have been better not said. but racists like to voice there views indirectly

The Dutch government is certainly more conservative now then even several years ago. Like with everything there is a trend that goes up and down, little more liberal one year and a little more conservative the next. So far it has not resulted in any large shifts in policy I can see.

The one thing that is a pity is that we also follow the international trend, which is more conservative these days then it has been in recent history. I dont think it is just the US. The entire world is filling again with fear, whether it is the environment, big brother, terrorist, or what not.

I still believe the majority of the Dutch are proud of our liberties and will defend them, perhaps even extend some. Only time will tell...

In the mean time, I know of no country (except maybe some Nordics) who handles prostitution, drugs, abortion, euthanasia, homosexuals, freedom of speech and in general freedom better.

Having said that, the weather still sucks.
