Sam Harris on Intellectual Honesty

gwaansays...

I don't really think Harris is one to speak about intellectual honesty!!!

Firstly, as Meera Nanda argued in the New Humanist in her review of 'The End of Faith', his analysis of religious extremism is flawed, and his criticism of religion is a mask to hide "what seems to be his real goal: a defense, nay, a celebration of Harris' own Dzogchen Buddhist and Advaita Vedantic Hindu spirituality."

Secondly, his book 'The End of Faith' is hugely biased against Islam and hugely forgiving of Judaism. The fact that Dershowitz gives the book a glowing review says it all. Harris even quotes Dershowitz's view of the Israeli state as being outstandingly tolerant in the face of Palestinian aggression!!! Harris conveniently ignore the fact that Israel as a state was built via the perpetration of horrific violence against the Palestinians and the British soldiers in Palestine. The fifty plus years of daily murder, abuse, persecution and humiliation of the Palestinians in the name of Zionism are conveniently excluded from Harris's consideration of religious extremism and terrorism.

This is not intellectual honesty!!!

Traconsays...

Qwaan how can an atheist be a Dzogchen Buddhist and Advaita Vedantic Hindu. He isnt but he is interested in how there pratices change brain structure and human neurobiology.

bluecliffsays...

well strictly speaking if he's advaita doesn't meen he believes in "god" (advaita is non dualism, and that can, in our sinchretistic times, easily be conneted with a sort of materialistic monism) and, well buddhist don't believe in a God as a personal path to salvation, and one can be an atheistic buddhist - no problem.
My guess is that he explains buddhism, it's goal of nirvana, via the possibilities of the human brain, and mental states.
