To resort to Satan or the absence of God to explain why people are bad as Hewitt does, does nothing to solve the problems of our world. If one on the other hand uses sociology, psychology, etc. to explain human behavior you can find ways to fix the problems.

I'm glad (and surprised) it was so civil, however in a debate about the divine origin of the Bible, you can't reference the Bible itself as an authoritative figure. A lot of weird circular logic with many of Hewitt's talking points. It's a shame since I've seen his religious peers argue much more sensibly.

I always enjoy Harris' debates. He's very civilized, polite and doesn't resort to personal attacks... unlike Hewitt.

If your only resort is to make personal attacks against the person you are debating, then you fail.

And wouldn't you know it, Hewitt uses the last few seconds to make the worst circular argument, when he knows Harris can't respond - "God exists because he obviously exists to affect people's lives". Please then, explain the existence of Scientology or any demonstrably wrong idea that people still believe in.

Wow! I feel like Harris did better than I think even Dawkins would have. Usually Dawkins sort of balks when he is confronted with this kind of nonsense, whereas Harris just stayed on message and ignored the BS, nonsensical challenge, and instead met strong, nonsensical rhetoric with strong, persuasive, sensible arguments.

Too bad his ace in his sleeve, the inquisition, came up just before the commercial break.

I have to wonder what the modern, religious moderate take of the inquisition. "Whoops we were wrong?" "They had the wrong interpretation, but ours is absolutely the right one? Because... uh... the Pope says so?" "Shut up and pray?"

How about the crusades?

I actually, come to think of it, haven't heard a convincing argument from modern christian orthodoxy concerning those particular parts of its history. Do they tend to ignore them? How is it not a huge moral weight on the shoulders of serious theological scholars?

It's called intellectual honesty. That goes for all groupthink. I was raised Baptist, but I was also raised to be honest with myself. This type of honesty is the key to break free the grasp of our made up tyrant kings and queens.

No argument drives me crazier than the "free will" argument. How can people (who believe in god) keep blaming men for free will if they think that god created everything? Everything... INCLUDING FREE WILL!!!

Why is it that people have such an easy time using this as an excuse for god?

I just don't get it...

Oh, and then there's the idea that Christians are being persecuted in America. A country that's 70% Christian.
