I'm a US citizen. I served 5 years in the Marine Corps. I have a wife and kid. If I was working my tail off just to keep them from starving while my neighbors to the north were enjoying prosperity, and I thought we could do better by emmigrating, even if it meant violating my neighbors' laws, I would do it. I would feel it was my responsibility to take care of my family that way.
"you chose to sneak across the border instead of coming here honestly". I should mention that my wife is not from here. Though we are married, it was not that easy to get her into the country. It cost us plenty of money, and I had to provide a lot of documentation. We managed it, but not everyone is so lucky. If you think some guy from Puebla can fill out a form, pay $50 and get a visa to come work in the US, you're just being naive. It simply is not that easy.
I agree with the fellow who mentioned cheap labor. If we suddenly got rid of all illegal labor, you couldn't eat in a restaurant-- a plate of fried rice would cost $12. Face it, a lot of our economy relies on illegal labor.
Of course you are right. That's why the "Day Without Immigrants" demonstration had such a huge economic impact on our country.
Our country is not dependent on illegal labor. Without the illegals, we can just get unemployed, impoverished AMERICAN CITIZENS to do the same jobs that those illegals are doing.
God help us if we start handing out amnesty to all the illegals that come into our country. Our country is already in enough debt as it is. What is going to happen if we have to start making welfare checks out to millions of illegals?
What impact are you talking about? Latino businesses closed. Latinos stayed home and many lost their jobs and wages the next day. I live the SF Bay Area and the only 'impact' was in the latino communities. BTW, it was the lowest crime day in the HISTORY in the predominately latino areas. We should do this every month.
The impact, if there is any, is going to be a big surprise when illegals find out the rest of us legal immigrants are not amused. That backlash is coming, mi padres.
And speaking as a proud black woman, I find the comparisons to the civil rights movement my parnets fought in offensive.
It was sarcasm. Read the rest of the comment.
You can't deport illegals out of the country or imprison them that would cost too much. So, why not just give them status as alien residents forcing them to pay taxes.
Just by the way why do you think they are leaving Mexico, might it be because of NAFTA and how cheap subsidized produce and food stuffs flooded the Mexican market pushing local farms out of business or maybe how companies get tax rebates for building factories in mexico and once those run out they just move the company to a country that has still cheaper labor.
Hmm do some research nothing is as simple as it seems.
"You notice how the Mexican flag has almost the same colors as the Palestinian flag.."- you're an ignorant asshole. How dare you, number 1, stereotype all Palestinians in such a negative manner, and number two where do you even make a comparison with Mexico to Palestine? I work with the two guys in the documentary, and they are some of the nicest people I've ever met. Their only goal is to make money to support their families--they're not criminals, they're not terrorists. They just work, and they work hard.
And secondly,
"Our country is not dependent on illegal labor. Without the illegals, we can just get unemployed, impoverished AMERICAN CITIZENS to do the same jobs that those illegals are doing."
Please, there are plenty of jobs out there for those who want it, but obviously those people would rather take a welfare or unemplyment check than work for their money. If they really wanted to go out and get a job--especially ones that Hispanics work (landscaping, busing, etc)--they could do it. But would they? I hardly doubt that a business over would pass an English speaking white American over for a Mexican. The President of Mexico (despite the political incorrectness of it) was right when he said that Mexicans take the jobs that not even blacks and poor whites would take. I have a hell of a lot more respect for those who risk their lives crossing a boarder to supprot their families than those who just pick up welfare checks.
Most of their intentions are good--they just want to make money, and don't we all? Making them legal and making them pay taxes would benefit everyone (our country's shit economy and their families).
