The Rush song is called YYZ, as in the three letter code for Toronto's Pearson International Airport.

Tighten the screws, and stop flipping the sticks, but fun to watch

looked very robotick and unatural to me like her fake smiles and random head movments. its cool that she can play a song but its like she has rehersed all her movments smiles drum flips like some sort of rigid rutene.

Peart does do a fair amount of flair -- twirling, flipping and throwing. The difference here is he has to play for 90+ minutes and she just give it her all for a measly 2:11.

The MIDI ruined it for me.

im not sure it would be possible to play the drums with any less passion ;-/

Eh... I liked her playing for sure. Didn't dig the MIDI, her fake smiles(cringe-tastic), or all those twirls(which mess up her rhythm more than once). I'd rather see her intensely playing it perfect and then smiling at the end for real, instead of trying to copy peart.

I like genuine, not forced.

Are we turning into YouTube here?

She's a 13 year old girl, who performs all over the world for people. This is why she does all the flips and smiles etc. I'm sure she gets most of her guidance from her parents, so don't be so hard on her.

13.

I'm sure when she's 16, she'll be a lot different. But for now, she's better than half the drummers in los angeles.

I'm sorry, but i'm not that impressed with this at all. Sure the girl is 13 and i'm sure she'll be great in 10 years. If we want to make a big deal about a young drummer, we may as well do it right. Check out Tony Royster:

http://www.videosift.com/video/Tony-Royster-Drum-Solo-12-years-old

Enough with the freaking stick flips already.

"If we want to make a big deal about a young drummer, we may as well do it right. Check out Tony Royster"

I didn't really post this for there to be a contest of "the best" young drummer ever. I'd rather watch a lot of different young musicians at many different stages of awesomeness.

I liked her performance. It's not perfect but give her some credit (and some f*cking support)! I will upvote for raw talent and potential.

Stop being a bunch of arseholes, she's amazing. I don't want to hear any more of it unless you're 12 years old and you think you can do better and you come back in a year and prove it.

I'm with volumptuous.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - too many whiny-assed high-minded armchair critics on the sift.

"Oh, look at this girl. Who does she think she is? 13 years old? Pfffft. I know a 12 year old who is better. Therefore she is fail. Disgusting!"

No wonder so many of you spend time on here...no friends in the RW.

Good on this 13 year-old girl. Great skills. And she looked like she was having fun.

Yea, the stick flipping really got in the way of a good performance there.

That said, as a midi nut I can tell you there really isn't a good midi of YYZ out there. Guitars in midi are a bit of an artform and none of them had it.

In those instances however some girls just decide to do the entire thing solo...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XsYuHbXZUk

(to be fair, the drums were pre-done, I thought she started out doing them in realtime but later one she is clearly not. EDIT: She us controlling multiple drum tracks with her feet, so while not realtime, she is controlling which drum patterns are played in realtime).

While very very solid for a 13 year old, she is quite loose, partially because of all the stick flipping, partially because her timing is just off by a touch.

Still for 13 she is damn good, better then I was at 14, though granted I didn't start playing until 14 and didn't have a set 1/2 that good until I was 18 lol.

As the comment says 'far better then anyone twice her age' isn't remotely true. Any 20'something drummer with a whiff of talent could drum circles around the girl. But if she keeps it up she'll be simply awesome by 20.

you wanna see drumming flair, check out Lance Garvin of Living Sacrifice. Beats his skins as if they were his red headed step-children.

Nice vid, nice drumming. This girl is here to stay

I just caught Peart and Rush in the R30 concert from Frankfurt, Germany in 2004 and he has a 360° kit with more drums, cymbals bells and xylophones than you could shake your drumsticks at. I'll give props to the 13 year old and even to Tony Royster if we're comparing, but I don't think either could keep up with Niel. That said, he's 50+, has had umpteen years of experience at this point and, eh, I'll guess did not have this level of talent at their age. But you always look up to others don't you? I can't imagine that Niel had that level of drummer to idolize 30 some odd years ago...

Gene Krupa! Max Roach!

There were loads of sick, sick drummers back then.

Zildjian.com: Who was the first drummer who inspired you to take up the instrument? Who were some of your early drum influences?

Answer: The first time I remember feeling a desire to play the drums was while watching the movie The Gene Krupa Story, at the age of eleven or twelve. The film’s dramatization of his life and Sal Mineo’s portrayal managed to make the idea of being a drummer seem exciting, glamorous, elegant, and dangerous. I started beating on the furniture and my baby sister’s playpen with a pair of chopsticks, and for my thirteenth birthday my parents gave me drum lessons, a practice pad, and a pair of sticks. They said they wouldn’t buy me real drums until I showed that I was going to be serious about it for at least a year, and I used to arrange magazines across my bed to make fantasy arrays of drums and cymbals, then beat the covers off them!

And don't forget Buddy Rich:

Can't stand this. Too much showing off, and no soul. It's like the girl's parents are whoring her out. Constant forced smiles, flipping the hair for no real reason, the twirled and flipped sticks at every moment. Can this girl play in a band (of members her own ages or older ... that isn't important)? Is she capable of creating her own rhythms and applying them, or is she just able to practice one thing and master it like her parents demand? She demonstrates no personality, and no soul, just forced practiced movements. I don't fault the girl for it. She has skill, and that's clear. She needs time with her instrument with less meddling from her parents.

i feel sorry for her. am i wrong to assume that, as a 13 year old asian, her parents literally crack the whip as she practices this exact routine x hours a day? the "smile" gives it away.

i prefer ronald jenkees if we're playing Youtube musical Star Search.

^Hmm, a lot of asian families do put much importance on putting their children through extra curricular activities and they often have very little time for fun and recreation. It's a culture thing, it's why China is going to take over as the superpower

The only reason i'm saying this is because two of my friends are TEFL teachers, and they teach privately after school too. And they have both commented on the fact, over the years most of the young asian kids they are teaching go from one lesson to the next until bedtime. Sometimes they love it, sometimes they despise it, all depending on their personalities I guess

An amazing young lady, with an incredible future ahead of her,and who undoubtedly applies all her effort and hard work into each performance. Too bad we all don't have the motivation that she has!!
