Risk management deals with situations that, although unlikely, would have unacceptable outcomes (death, rape).
Personally, I've survived several Cougar attacks over the years- especially when I worked in that bar.
"One of the coyotes has been killed" says the news piece. Is there any evidence that it was one of the coyotes who attacked her? Doubtful, but law enforcement generally responds this way when someone is mauled: eliminate the animals that _might_ have been the attackers. Grizzly though this attack is, I would weep for the coyotes which are killed for being the same species as the ones that attacked her.
I completely agree with you about the killing of the wrong coyotes...but perhaps there is a way to tell? The reason, at least as far as I understand, is that once the animals attack a human they are more likely to do so again and that is the reason they need to destroy them.
Coyotes are typically in the 30-40lbs range and hunt in pairs. These are fairly small animals we're talking about. They chase their prey down as a dog or wolf would, so you'll know an attack is coming. If you ever find yourself in this situation don't bother running; you're not fast enough. Face the attacker and line up the hardest kick to the ribs you can manage.
That goes for pretty much any canine. They're very protective of their undersides and nothing will make them reconsider their actions like a hard shot to the gut. They also have difficulty attacking stationary targets as they rely on tripping up larger prey in order to bring it down.

But seriously, this really hit me, too, for some reason. The poor girl had everything going for her. And that's a really shitty way to die. I know that most ways to die are shitty ways, but being somethings meal du jour...ug.
My family used to hunt coyotes back in the 1970's, and it takes about five dogs to take down one coyote, just to put some perspective on how tough they are.
And I have a very active imagination, but if you listen to that first song on her MySpace page, it's kind of creepy, considering the way she died.

Male coyote in Eastern Canada reach over 60lbs. They are substantially larger than the "standard" American ones. That being said, this is a rare attack, and if she ran, she would become prey.

Seems like a little pepper spray would do the trick. It's light, and it's typically non-lethal so you wouldn't have remorse over defending yourself if you are a nature lover.

Alright, why do people Hike alone?
I can't remember were but it was a video, that if you are attacked by an animal Pepper Spray works very well. I would even say a Tazer works well too.
I never hike without a weapon, Firearms are illegal to carry on most Federal owned parks, and some states have different laws. But you can get away with knives, pepper spray, tazers, and clubs.
Its simple really, never Hike alone, and if you have to be on guard.
RIP, its a terrible way to go.
The law here is that you can shoot them on site, for any reason, any time, no permission needed because they are an invasive species. This is another good reason.
Ditto for not hiking without some kind of weapon, a putter, a knife, anything. It's just good policy.

RCMP officers were near the scene and shot at it - you won't find a bunch of coyotes with bullet wounds in the park - they no doubt found the one that was wounded and initially wandered away.
Do your research before just gushing your random thought stream and wasting everyone's time.
