Antifas Riots in Athens

"Athens city center turned into a battlefield today(Feb,2008). Incidents started at 11:00 in Stadiou Street between police, protestors and supporters of extreme right and leftist parties that had organized rallies. Far-right supportrs members of “Chrisi Avgi” organization had originally planned a rally at Kolokotroni Square at 19:00 on Saturday to mark the “anniversary of Imia”. Extreme right wing supporters had gathered at Kolokotroni Square while other leftist groups had gathered at Klathmonos Sqare. At around 14:00 police clashed with left-wing, anti-establishment youths that had set up road blocks and cut off traffic on Panepistimiou Street."

Antifas [anti-FAS, an-TI-fas] are a primarily European militant anti-fascist youth movement. They like to run around and break up Neo-Nazi gatherings and beat the members. I don't condone it outright, but have a hard time getting upset about it. They also take up their Molotov cocktails whenever the political Right is on the rise. In this case, I believe their primary grievance was the privatization of educational institutions in Greece.

From the dubious Wikipedia...

"While European liberal anti-fascists either call on the state to censor what they call hate speech or prosecute fascists under existing laws, militant anti-fascists either oppose such calls or put no energy into heeding them. In contrast, militant anti-fascists believe that fascism should be tackled by communities rather than by the state.[citation needed] Militant anti-fascists are usually supporters of class struggle, and view fascism as an anti-working class political system. Militant anti-fascists tend to promote radical anti-capitalist transformation of society, rather than defending the status quo of liberal democracy. This often translates into support for some form of socialism or anarchism."
