Recoating The Palomar Observatory Really Huge Mirror

. . . and the Brawny Man shows up with paper towels and everyone proceeds to dress in them after wiping the mirror clean.

Seriously, this was absolutely fascinating. I hope this makes it out of the queue.

I'm confused. If they have to remove the coating with acid and redeposit it anyway, why bother with the first soap and water wash. "They have to keep it wet so spots don't develop" the voice says, but then they remove the entire coating!

That is a good question, bellman. Since the mirror has been exposed to oils and atmospheric contaminants for a year (or more?) before the acid stage, they have probably found that the coating stripping process is more effective when it is working on JUST the aluminum and not all the accumulated gunk. That is my guess. I am not a professional astronomer or telescope mechanic but I do play one on TV.
