looks like they've taken a page from the VPD show of force manual.
Exactly. This isn't excessive force in the least.
Firstly, for the police to approach with guns drawn means this was already something relatively serious - these guys aren't wanted for something benign.
Secondly, notice how the guy in brown does what he his told and isn't even touched until he is handcuffed? The guy in black repeatedly disregards instructions. If a police officer with his gun drawn tells you to put your head down and not move you put your head down and stop moving. This is for your safety. Every time he moves the officer has to make a quick decision - is he going for a weapon? Listen to instructions and the police will not be rough.
Another thing, the kicks to the suspect's sides are a trained move by police that is considered a physical control method. Every police organization trains to use these in this type of situation.
I think this was well handled by these officers. The guy in black should have used his brain and followed instructions.
To be fair, those two had just robbed a Tim Hortons.
Nothing pisses off a cop more than an attack on his doughnut shop
Or walking on the backs of his legs?
Totally unnecessary.
The head-stomping seems like it wasn't called for but the guy in the black shirt is not following directions. That could've been handled differently IMO.
First kick is hard to say, probably over reaction but after that the guy does what he's been told.
The last kick.. Hmm.. Very sudden and sharp moves is NOT what you want to do when someone is pointing a gun to your head. If i were that cop i think i would've done the same and take in to consideration that he is monitoring two guys at the same time.
This just looks like it is excessive, but there are hundreds of videos out there that clearly are that.
Fair enough, but was stomping on his head really necessary?
Yes. He refused to obey directions to keep his head down. No cop with his gun out is going to reach down and do it. And a kick to the ribs is not uncalled for either, it means that again they're not doing what they're told to do. They're techniques to get compliance. There isn't anything excessive in the entire video, it's based on the suspects reactions and behavior.

skeeve: VPD (vancouver police) is know for using excessive for regularly and being, er, less than professional, so to speak. much like the abbotsford police in this video. just look at the Dziekanski case with is going on now.
You mean the RCMP? Yeah different police force too. Then again the VPD deals with some of Canada's worst shit heads on a regular basis due to BC's revolving door court system.
