Many people have no idea how many satellites orbit around the Earth. Now you can see the real-time positions of over 13,000 satellites updated every 30 seconds with Google Earth. -GE blog

The video shows all satellites, this includes active satellites, inactive satellites, debris and rocket bodies.
Here is the kml file for Google Earth.

Looks crowded. I wonder how many crash into each other. Do you have check in with NASA to put one up there? So they can plot you a trajectory that doesn't collided with any of the 13,000 others?

The sphere occupied by near Earth space is very big. Imagine spreading 13,000 cars (average size for a satellite) around on Earth, that doesn't seem so crowded anymore, does it?

Well if you look hard I'm sure you can find GeoEye-1 somewhere between the active satellites
If you have the kml file in Google Earth you can check what you want to see, i.e. active satellites, inactive satellites, debris and rocket bodies.

Seriously though, how do shuttles make it into space without crashing into one?

There are only about 6,080 active artificial satellites in earths orbit. The rest is mostly debris.
