After their attempt to take the stage was stopped by police, Rage Against the Machine took to the crowd with an acapella performance. Armed with only a megaphone, and thousands of fans, RATM played a 10min acapella set of Bulls on Parade and Killing in the Name of.

I got chills @ 8:45. That was some powerful shit right there. Imagine being a cop in a crowd of 3000 chanting "fuck you I won't do what you tell me".

As much as I love RATM, it would have being chaos had they performed on the Capitol Lawn. This government has done a lot to piss off people, and Rage's music is the perfect vehicle for that anger.

hahaha. This part made me laugh:

RATM: We're just 4 musicians. Why the fuck are these cops afraid of us? Are they afraid of us?
Everyone: YEAAAAAH!!!!!
RATM: (Shakes his head)No, no
Everyone: NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
RATM: They're NOT afraid of 4 musicians...They're afraid of YOU!
Everyone: YEAAAAAAH!

Good video. Zack de la Rocha is a class act. After getting them primed like that, he could've sent them rioting through the streets, but instead he tells them to leave peacefully. Class Act.

Godamn, this is what I like to see.

Revolution is the Pod
Systems rattle from
When the Winds of Will are stirred
Excellent is Bloom

But except its Russet Base
Every Summer be
The Entomber of itself,
So of Liberty --

Left inactive on the Stalk
All its Purple fled
Revolution shakes it for
Test if it be dead. - Emily Dickinson

*sigh* Where is the RAGE? The machine is next door and you're busy playing sing-along!

Go burn down the motherfucking machine! Rush the cops and barrel your way into the building, tearing down everything in sight. Create anarchy for the system! Overturn cars! Knock over reporters! Destroy it all, you goddamned fucking AMATEURS!

You know what happens when you advocate peaceful rage against the machine? NOTHING.

Upvote for the a cappella version of my favorite songs, but not for anything else. Fuck! This country dies while crowds go to karaoke. What a fucking shame.

"Overturn cars! Knock over reporters!"

Haha listen to you pencil neck in front of your PC, criticizing a peaceful protest and advocating violence. You're a joke, you and your avatar icon.

thinker247says...

How do you peacefully protest something? Ask nicely for the government to quit raping the earth and committing genocide against millions of innocent people, all while funding wars that deplete our national reserve of both money and soldiers? Offer them brownies in exchange for peace? Get real.

I advocate violence, not in irrational amounts that cause chaos, but in specifically utilized methods that bring down the establishment and allow for the emergence of a true republic. All while peaceful protesters are constantly ignored, because nobody in power listens to peace.

Oh, and did you just say my icon is a joke? First of all, "avatar icon" is redundant, like your junk DNA. Secondly, it's meant to be a joke. Either that or Zombie Bush just ate your entire family, peacenik. Fuck off.

As long as they first obtain a protest permit, then a revolution permit. Wouldn't want to overthrow the government illegally, right?

Be a true patriot and overthrow your government! The way the founding fathers wanted it to be done, with blood flowing!

You gotta be careful though man, violence at this stage in the election could just solidify a republican vote. Violence against the federal government strikes fear in the hearts of citizens nation wide, citizens fearful of change (republicans) are also fearful of the changers. You gotta consider that certain citizens see John McCain and the republicans as defenders of the status-quo, and fear can be a detrimental influence on an individual's vote.

What im saying is; do you want to be the cause of the fear that prevents your country from seeing change? People will vote out of fear for the status-quo if their other option is uncertainty.

Provide the peace that is necessary for the betterment of your nation, the nation that has the utmost influence world wide.

Revolution through violence - because the ends justify the means.

Before you enter the fight and start throwing righteous fists ask yourself what you're fighting for. America doesn't need any more Wars in the name of...

Upvote for peaceful protest. Let your voices be your weapons and your words your ammunition folks.

weird how people write pathetic internet comments about how there should be an armed revolution, while sitting on their asses.

you're just embarassed here by someone actually doing something, actually transferring their message to millions of people... because you personally don't do shit.

9232says...

I don't know where I stand on violence for political change. Over the years I've come to believe that much of the Bush administration are criminals, and that few, if any of them, will be punished for their serious crimes. Claims that the administration is full of criminals is incredibly popular amongst this website, and somewhat popular in the public at large. In fact, saying Bush is a criminal himself isn't going to be very offensive in the country at large, I feel. Most will agree that Bush will go unpunished for all of this, not seeing a day in prison.

This all leads to a weird situation where people are saying violence is not the answer to the crimes of the Bush administration, while at the same time believing violence is obviously required for police and law to be maintained. Criminals can only be punished through violence. Law can only be maintained through violence. There's nothing controversial about this.

It's really frustrating to think that so many criminals in the White House will exit their careers there without a single ounce of punishment. In fact, nearly all of them will probably go on to make large sums of money in the business world. So, they will be rewarded for their crimes.. by us, the consumers.

So, to sum up, this is what people often think. 1. Bush = Criminal. 2. Violence is required to punish crime. 3. BUT, violence against Bush... NO.

It's just not consistent. Now.. violence against Bush being suicidal, therefore impossible. That's logical. But saying violence against a criminal Bush is just entirely wrong, no matter what... that just makes no sense unless you believe police officers should be removed from every society on earth. Then and only then is such a belief consistent and logical.

And please don't confuse the word "violence" with "murder" "killing" "explosions" or what not. The police use violence, aka "the force of the law", to keep order on a daily basis. It's totally necessary.

This sounds ridiculous, but (although again, if Bush is in fact a criminal, then it is perfectly reasonable) I personally hope Bush is apprehended by some group of people and punished severely for his crimes at some point in the future. At the very least a life term in some kind of prison. Preferably apprehended by agents of the government, but if not, that's OK too.

thinker247says...

Personally, I don't give a shit either way. I can advocate violence without moving from my seat, because I'm not advocating anything for myself. I'm merely suggesting a better alternative for those in this video who are willing to stand up and do something to fight against their "oppressors." I'm offering a solution that doesn't involve standing in front of a group of musicians and chanting along with whatever they say. I love Rage Against the Machine, but when the crowd mimics their every word like a bunch of lemmings, it bothers me. Because they're not really doing anything. I'll bet you that most of those people didn't change a goddamned thing that day. But they all went home and said, "I listened to RATM live and a cappella!"

I could transfer a message to millions of people by shooting a bunch of people in a McDonald's. Within minutes, every 24-hour news station would be focused on Boise, Idaho, and my "message" would be sent to millions around the world. But that wouldn't mean they couldn't change the channel a second later and shrug their shoulders, saying to themselves, "Another one? Wow. Oh well, time for my coffee break!" So it's not transferring a message that is important; it's how the action of that message is activated. But what does it matter if that message is sent to millions of people who turn the channel to Spongebob Squarepants? That's what millions do every day, and that's what our President does, because he loves Spongebob.

So I sit at home and quietly wait for the government to eventually destroy everything for which our predecessors worked so hard. Does it bother me? Yes, to an extent. But I know that in the end I really don't care that much either way. I'm a bit of a pessimist and an apathetic figure, if you must know. But at least I'm honest. I'd really hate myself if I advocated violence and then sat at home, hoping someone else would do it for me. But that's not me. Oh, time for my coffee break.

It would only be a cop-out if I failed to explain my position fully, or evaded the question entirely. I thought I fulfilled my obligation, though.

And I would like a follow-up to the words "but still." Don't stop debating with me now, MINK.

yeah that is a coherent and valid copout, but still.

It has been over a year now and nothing has change but the guy in charge. Where's the rage now? I hear nothing but silence now that your guy is in charge and has done nothing but open the same play book and continue on right where Bush left off. Where's the rage now when your guy says he's going to end the occupations, gets elected, then send 30,000 more troops. Where's the rage now that your guy has given more money to corporate fat cats than the Republicans have ever dreamed possible. Your guy feeds the machine with all of our lives and futures and all I hear from you is silence.
