The irony of this is so sad and pathetic. By offing himself, he successfully proved natural selection. It's a damn shame he had to be cowardly enough to take an innocent person with him. I wonder if the end of the shotgun tasted like sour grapes?

Further thoughts - people who suffer from depression have a very difficult time having their world views confronted, in my experience. I have two direct family members who struggle with it, which puts me in an odd position as an atheist.

They are already suffering from instability in general; having their perception of reality directly challenged, especially if they can't refute the challenges or understand them, can make their world fall apart even more. I mean, I used to be a christian. I didn't suffer from anything other than being socially anxious from time to time - but when I finally started to consider the plausibility of my faith being misplaced... it was terrifying and shattering. I can only imagine how hard it would be for someone who struggles in general. And if it's extremely hard, I'd imagine that they would lash out against it, or block it all out entirely.
