Groobo from speeddemosarchive.com posted this single-segment speed run of Valve's Portal for Windows PC. This is a dang impressive use of the tricks learned so far, especially since this was done in one sitting. The end credits are not included in the video. Timing starts from when the player first gains control of the character until the last piece of GladOS is destroyed.

There are at least two things that need to be explained about the tricks used. The first is that you move faster when you jump than if you simply walk. There's a bug with velocity though that if you jump, turn around in mid-air, and continue hitting the jump button your velocity will continually increase. This is why you see the player jumping backwards at a high rate of speed in some sections.

Another trick that's fairly new is the GladOS bug. GladOS is the boss of the game. Usually you have to use rockets and portals to slowly destroy her by knocking off pieces of her one at a time. However, a turrets bullets will still knock the pieces off of her, and there's no pause in between shots. This is how he quickly destroys GladOS.

That whole backwards jumping thing is a load of bullshit. You don't go any damn faster. That sounds more like a way to validate a cheat.

The game multiplies your velocity by 120% when you jump, but doesn't allow forward velocity to pass 120%. If you are backwards, and crouching, the game doesn't properly turn 'backwards' speed into 'forwards' speed, so it keeps multiplying your speed as you keep jumping. And since there's no friction if you bunnyhop perfectly... you can go ridiculously fast. The fastest place you'll really see it though is approaching glados, there's no other hallway big enough.

Quality post, flechette - and I did notice a speed-up from the bunnyhopping at about 2:05. I'm not shocked an engine with roots in the Quake series still has a few physics tricks left to exploit.

I did the whole "running backwards" thing before I called bullshit. It didn't work. At all.

Then you're doing it wrong. Jump forward, turn around in mid-air, crouch, and jump right when you land, and continue jumping. It's not easy to do. It's not just ... turning around and jumping backwards.

Nope, just tried it, and it didn't work. I didn't get a speed boost - just fell down and hurt myself on the fire mantel.

NEWBS, if you can't strafe jump then you can't do this either
BTW I'd seriously doubt that this is viable on the 360 version... takes a mouse to do this kind of tom-foolery properly

God this makes me want this game even more. Looks like somebody's gonna go buy the Orange Box next week when he gets paid.

Personal Favorite was the companion cube level, ignoring all of the powerballs.
