You should also watch
Honey Badger - The Most Fearless Animal on Earth
Adaptation by the same production company as Watership Down on a novel by the same author, Richard Adams. Don't watch it if you are prone to suicidal tendancies.

Upvote for the clear labeling of such a suicide inducing movie. I couldnt watch it all, think I saw some of it before.

I think there was a determined effort to make movies (animated movies, attractive to children) that were bleakly, profoundly depressing. To what end I cant guess but I've seen so many of them, they often used to be tv filler on a saturday afternoon or just after school.

I cant put names on most of them, I was too young, but "when the wind blows" is a great example. They showed it just when the kids were coming home from school at the height of the cold war. We now know just how close war was in the 80's, and to a child it was horrifying seeing grandma and grandpa dying of rad sickness. Now thats what I call entertainment!

As for all the other movies about the animals dying or going extinct, shit I'll stop thinking about it

^"When The Wind Blows" is the most depressing cartoon I've seen to date (haven't watched this one yet) and we do have it here on the Sift:

It's also really well done, you just might not want to watch it alone. But not with a first date either.

They can't make something so emotionally resonate these days without pandering to the 5 year old set.

I believe animation is the more liberating of motion arts. But its shackled in the kindergarten.
