I don't think the dog is afraid of the cat so much as all the random people who come up legs swinging kicking at the cat. Trust me, that dog is not afraid of that cat. The dog is afraid of the over-reacting people.

Maybe it's more of a conditioning thing. The rott grew up with cats as a pup that'd pick on him and beat the crap out of him. Being a dumb dog he doesn't realize he's about 8 times their size.

pipp: I think that in the wild, the dog would have just run away. It has no interest in killing the cat unless it really gets into the fight instead of just this jabbing.

I would have kicked the cat, if it were completely unprovoked. What might be more likely is that the cat had kittens nearby or something and tried to keep the big beast away.

Firstly, if the Rottie was scared, the owner should not get down and coddle it. That is your instinct, but it is the wrong one for a dog. Get the cat away and go about your business. The dog will forget it happened much quicker.

Secondly, in regards to what it would take for the dog to kill the cat, I would imagine the dog would do some serious damage if the cat attacked the owner.

We used to have a calico who would go berzerk after any dogs who came onto our property whenever she had kittens (which was often, cause she had gorgeous kittens that people loved). We lived at the edge of the city and always had 2 or 3 pet cats. She was always one of those 2 or 3, despite the others regularly "disappearing" (read: eaten by coyotes). She was, quite literally, one tough mother. I saw her once chase off a big yellow lab from down the street, who i know for a fact was not a coward. But again, that was only when she had kittens. Once her babies were gone, she'd just avoid the dogs.

I'm guessing that cat is a female with a litter nearby.

I agree, there's a litter nearby, but the dog is not showing any fear of the cat. And to Rottenseed, the dog actually goes after the cat once or twice, it doesn't get passive until the woman gets it its face, that's where the conditioning sets in, he is submissive to the woman (who obviously doesn't know how to handle the situation). And honestly, it shows very appropriate behavior for the situation.
