With MRSA threatening to infect huge numbers of patients who make even short trips to the hospital, and the gradual increase in the number of bacteria that are resistant to all known antiobiotics, scientists are turning to new ways to conquer the killer bugs. The emergence of dangerous antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria is most prevalent in the USA where antibiotics are available over the counter and are often mishandled.
The answers to these problems may be locked in the science of the former Soviet Union, and whether this potential can be unlocked depends on subtle aspects of intellectual property and patent law, since pharmaceutical companies must be able to control the revenues from a discovery.

gluoniumsays...oh how I pine for the days when you could actually learn something from NOVA and HORIZON. This is a prime example of how good science shows can be. this is about a billion times better than anything either of them offer today. no glitzy, insulting, dumbed down "HEY WATCH THIS ISNT IT SUPER FUCKING SEXYCOOL YEAAAAAAAA!!" bullshit. Just science, honest information and good journalism. The story is damn interesting in its own right, not because some absurdly straining, overdramatic, treacle infused voice over begs me to think it is.
bl968says...I would be strongly in favor of a British style license with the funding going to PBS in the united States.
sirexsays...agreed, the bbc used to (and still do mostly) provide very high quality documenties and science shows. Their nature and history shows are top rate too.
