Passage: The 100x16 pixel video game

[YT]:"A video of me running through the game Passage, with captions explaining the game a bit. It's a 100 pixel by 16 pixel game by Jason Rohrer that was submitted for Kokoromi's Gamma256 event. The game runs through a character's life, starting with him choosing to fall in love or not, then walking and aging. The score goes up as you walk right (in larger increments if you fall in love) and treasure chests are scattered below. Kind of a cute game. Check it out. "

I especially love the way that the past becomes more and more blurry as you go along, this is really quite brilliant. Not much as a game, but really interesting as a piece of art.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but what beauty did anyone find in this? I'm fine with art, but as a game, this is junk.

I looked up comments on this in many places and lots of people seem to talk about having a fucking life changing epiphany or something after playing it. I don't get it.

And yes I did actually play it.

It's a beautiful game, i feel sorry for you if you don't get it or aren't at least a tad moved by it. I'm proud that i was moved by this game and i value the difference between me and someone who wasn't.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that this should be "life-changing," but I'm very impressed by the way the author used an under-valued form of expression (video games, known for being mostly entertainment without any real meaning or social commentary) to create something that can make people pause, think, discuss, and analyze the work and its relationship to the real world.

You don't need to feel sorry for me for disagreeing with you. I value our difference as well, but perhaps for a different reason.
