He definitely shouldn't have been flying in those conditions. Paragliders are inherently quite safe, but only if you're smart about when and where you fly.

Trippy.

I bought a hang-glider a couple years ago, but...due to a few unexpected problems, primarily a kind of jerky instructor, I haven't been able to log more than about 37.5 seconds of air time.

When you first want to fly, all you can think about is soaring around, but once you get up there for a little while, you start thinking "Man...it's a long way down...."

The instrument is called a variometer. It measures altitude and change in altitude... when it beeps it means he is going up (in a thermal). Higher pitched beeps mean faster gains in altitude. It allows a pilot to find lift and stay up (for hours, all day in good conditions).

sounds like the way to go there, hueco, hang time is important for the meditation...which is what this would be for m'self.....the crash landing inna tree might be fun...was for this guy-but he did lose his gear...oh well, a story, and experience-

that's why you should always pack a spare shute. i used to fly for a few years, never happened to me, but my friend landed on a tree just like in this video only his lines got tangled from spinning out of control and he had to deploy the spare shute (which you have almost no control over, it's just there to put you down safely if your main gets tangled). i've seen quite a few accidents (one fatal) and it really is very unpredictable up there and if you're reckless, you probably won't last for long. but if you fly smart, know the terrain and learn a thing or two about the weather, you should be fine and enjoying yourself...
and always pack a cell phone or radio so if you go solo and get hurt, you can call for help and send them your gps coordinates.
