This was almost 10 years ago; digital cameras and digital projection have come a long way since then. I wonder if he still feels the same way (I suspect that he does).

I'll upvote for the possible discussion, but I think PTA is wrong on this one.

I think he was right when he said it, and quite possibly still is.

However, like you said — this was almost a decade ago, and a lot has happened to digital in those years. Right now, I think we're at a point where some movies can benefit from being done digitally, and others would be done a great injustice if not shot and shown in the film medium.

In five years, we may be at a place where our understanding of the digital medium is good enough that it can compete fully with film, though, IMO.

one of the biggest problems at the time PTA said this was the lack of sufficient contrast sensitivity in video camcorders, which was one of the biggest reasons why things shot on video could not attain the "film look". however, with the recent advances in HD-video camcorders and the increasing affordability of them for individual consumers, that major barrier has been for the most part brought down. granted, lack of adequate lighting, camera setup, boom mics, or post-production/editing can and does still sufficiently ruin many videos, but it is now much easier to get a video to resemble film. when done well and transferred later to film and projected, the differences are slight.

so i guess what i'm saying is with greater tech innovations, i disagree with him about the method of shooting a subject, but agree with him completely about the method of projection and its memorizing abilities.

I think how good digital video looks depends a lot on who's shooting it -- if you look at, say, Zodiac, that looks very film-like and is in fact a damn good looking movie. On the other hand you have something like 21, which looks awful and cheap.

And I was skeptical about digital projection, but after seeing a few films projected that way I'm sold. It's always in perfect focus (I guess it's calibrated digitally, unlike a film projector, though I'm not sure about that), and of course there's no scratches or reel changes.
