"The XO-1, previously known as the $100 Laptop or Children's Machine, is an inexpensive laptop computer intended to be distributed to children around the world, especially to those in developing countries, to provide them with access to knowledge. The laptop is developed by the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) social welfare organization. OLPC is a U.S. based, non-profit organization, 501(c)(4) created by faculty members of the MIT Media Lab to design, manufacture, and distribute the laptop and its software." From Wikipedia.

I've been watching the development of this project for a while now, not only am I impressed by the intent of the project, but also all the ingenious design features they have come up with.

Nice sift, I've always thought the OLPC project was a great idea.

Also, the official site is here.

One of the great ideas they've been kicking around for a while is "Buy one, sponsor two", as in, sell the laptop at $300 per to people in the US. The extra $200 would go to buying two laptops, which wouuld be given to the children.

"Buy one, sponsor two",

Yup, sign me up for that one. these are cool, and would make a great gift for kids here in the filthy rich world as well.

I'd definitely 'buy one sponsor two'; looks like you could read books and stuff on there pretty well, and if you could power it with foot or solar I'd take that little beast off to the beach or something.

BicycleRepairMan,

What's it like being "filthy rich"? I can only wonder.

Great project!

Can't wait for the follow-up project "One set of glasses per child" after they've been staring at the tiny display for a while...
