I don't see it as showmanship as much as I see Olbermann as the guy on the Titanic telling everyone the ship is going to sink, and everybody is whispering to each other "Why won't he shut up and let us enjoy ourselves?"
I don't think the left has ever understood what's at stake and how long we're going to be fighting islamofascism.
What's at stake is a world free of 14th-century barbarians attempting to wreck advanced societies and spawn another dark age which more enlightened religions passed through centuries ago.
As for how long this will take: Iraq is but one small theater in the coming decades-long wars. We're fighting desert warriors who are used to waiting out the enemy. They deserve no admiration but do deserve respect for their capabilities and resilience. They must be stopped permanently, just like the nazis and the commies.
I'm taking the long view here because liberals won't: they hate history, which exposes their same failed agendas over and over again. Appeasement didn't work with Derr Hitler and it won't work with these fanatics.
You could stop hating the people trying to kill the people trying to kill you, or rather, let them do their jobs without noise from the olbyloon hooting to his dismally small ratings audience.
I don't have a lot of patience for the self-righteous nuts on the far left who are still living in the late '60's, but at least they're well-intentioned -- peace & love & tree-hugging and all that. The nuts on the far right are this scary cocktail of fear and hatred and ignorance which are absolutely hell-bent on destruction.

The camera switching was definitely annoying, and actually blew the theatric effect that Olbermann quite capably created himself. His theatrics are certainly planned, but they are not insincere, and so I think them appropriate. I don't like him co-opting Murrow's catch-phrase, though. That's always rubbed me the wrong way. It would be a tip-o-the-hat if he did it once or twice, but he's taken it as his own.
Ultimately, it's a shame that more prominent journalists will not allow themselves to editorialize this way. I guess the fear of coming off as another raving talking head is too great for the serious journalists. Oh wait -
