I disagree that he showed up the reporter. Individual pays != universal healthcare, buddy.

has a pretty good handle on current policy. interviewer fell right into his hands.

I never understood how Sen. Clinton would enforce a mandatory universal healthcare system. Anybody have info about this? (... fining people who don't buy into it? jail time if they don't pay those fines? seems like libertarians would crap their pants about this.)

mandating universal health care always seemed a little sketchy to me. we've mandated universal car insurance, but has that affected the rate of non-insurance?

Just look at Canada. Their taxes are through the roof on everything there just to pay for it, and it's still not all free.

True MG, but as a Canadian I can tell ya from birth we have been brainwashed into accepting taxes, we know where the money goes, and for the most part we just accept it. The tax isn't enough to send anybody to the poor house. Many arguments can be made for and against but what I think we all appreciate is the simple peace of mind knowing knowing you're covered if something goes wrong.

seeing this out of context here: it seems to me that the interviewer was trying very hard to catch this guy out. The more he probed and badgered the more intelligent and well informed the interviewee looked.

Came across like the interviewer was on a mission to prove a point and came up empty.

... one thing that hasn't been noted; the 'Super-Tuesday' votes broke significantly along education of the voters... college education for Obama, high-school education for Clinton.

David Brooks of the New York Times wrote a very interesting and thoughtful piece about why this is and what this means; http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/08/opinion/08brooks.html
(makes you register to see it now... definitely thought provoking, so worth the minute of effort if you're interested)

People say Canadian taxes are "through the roof," but it's all a matter of what you're used to. Here in Ontario, we pay 13% tax on most things, and that's completely acceptable to most of us, especially given our "universal" health care. No, it doesn't cover everything (dental, optometry, etc. are excluded), but I would be fine with taxes increasing to accommodate those services. Our taxes may be higher than some other countries, but that money's going to important services, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I am surprised this kid stayed on his toes and kicked ass (and no im not saying that because he is black before people jump on my ass) its just the average young individual i have seen would of folded a minute into this interrogation. They wouldnt have enough material or information to go on. This guy gives me hope that not all voters are sheep and that intelligence can actually win through in an American Presidential Election. Also i personally dont agree with universal health care but i do love the idea of making it voluntary. I havent been able to afford health care for years so yes i have the constant worry of what will i do if something happens but also think of the money i saved by not paying any fees. Its almost like gambling, let it be our choice if we want to risk going without it or play it safe. Not everyone needs to much so you should never force it.

More discussions like this should be had in the streets. While the old guy was a little aggressive (him being an obvious cynic because of the majority of ignorant people out there), they both kept it civil the entire time.

I'll give props to the kid as well. He held up and talked a good game long after I would've looked like another dolt on the street. It's a shame that this kind of thinking and speaking and presence is not taught in most of our schools.

I think the interviewer was playing devil's advocate. I wouldn't be surprised if he saw this kid speaking well to somebody else, and wanted to get something good on tape, so he pushed with harder questions.

At any rate, he did a good job.

Oh, and optional healthcare plus subsidies for the poor would be a fair equivalent to universal healthcare. The point is to make sure everyone has access, not necessarily to force everybody to pay for it.

I lived in Canada for a couple of years, and while I was not entitled to the med care I was living with somebody who was, and I have to say it works pretty well. The taxes never made anything overly expensive, and other things, like college education, are also crazy subsidized.

In the US we hate taxes because we feel that the money is wasted, Canadians don't seem to mind them, because they know they are, at least to some extent, put to good use. I would love to have that problem.

I gotta agree with Fedquip and Xax - I would never have it any other way!

Canadians are proud of our health care - hell, we are proud of our country! Our taxes are not "through the roof" like MarineGunrock hasn't been brainwashed to believe. They are a little higher than yours, and I don't have to spend my days worrying about access to health care.

I think it alleviates ALOT of animosity between classes that exists in the U.S. People here just don't have to compete over something as important as health.

You're making minimum wage with a wife and child, and live in a step up from a hole in the wall.

You used to have a few health problems as a child so you weren't accepted for medical insurance.

Your kid gets hit by a car, starts bleeding internally, broken arm and leg and a few ribs on the side of the impact.

The kid, however was crossing where/when they shouldn'tve been so you have no case in court to sue for medical costs, and you were barely making enough money to get by before.

I've had this discussion with americans millions of times, I would personally rather lose however much from my paycheck to allow that family to keep their child in the best medical care possible. Rather than to have a family have to try and scrounge every last penny out of what they had before.

Life for everyone > an extra few bucks on my paycheck. imo.

I think Dghandi has a really good point. Americans are very tax averse because they're not used to seeing many quality public services come out of their taxes. Sure, they have one of the most technologically advanced armies in the world, a really good highway network, etc. but public schools are a mess, and most public hospitals in the US are places you wouldn't want to end up in. Sure, they pay lower taxes, but they also get what they pay for.

The interviewer did a good job of getting to the bottom of the Derrick's opinions and views about why his candidate is better.

The title is a fair description of the video. "Impresses interviewer." Not "Pwns interviewer."

I don't get why some of you act like the interviewer got aggressive and got his ass kicked. He pressed with more questions until he got the answers he wanted.

"I don't get why some of you act like the interviewer got aggressive and got his ass kicked. He pressed with more questions until he got the answers he wanted."

I think it's because the guy constantly interrupted and raised his voice. If you do that, it's gonna look alot like you are trying to fluster someone more than get honest answers out of them. Otherwise, why not just let the subject of the interview answer your questions? Then, when they don't lose their composure, you look like a douche who who got handled.

MG... i'll take an expensive doctor in preference to a cheap profiteer ANY DAY.

Heck, even the Lithuanian system worked for me. i pay 15% flat tax and $40 a month social (including state pension, which i doubt is worth anything, but that's another debate). I wasn't even registered when i went to hospital but they just did the paperwork afterwards. Try that in your "land of the free". 10 days in a bed, no extra charge. The food was shit, but hey, my girl brought me stuff. So in effect i just privatised the kitchen lol. The surgeon worked three jobs, in public hospitals not private, in lithuania not abroad, out of PATRIOTISM AND LOVE OF HIS PROFESSION. something i guess you understand... and something i guess "the markets" will never be able to measure and reward. Oh, and how is the US system taking care of veterans?

props to the interviewer for being nice at the end, btw.

Great job... the interviewer went in jaded and expecting to encounter an uninformed ignorant voter. But towards the end you could tell he was pleasantly surprised with the individuals answers. That guy is most assuredly one of a FEW well informed voters out there. Unfortunately such a voter is relatively rare. I'd love to see the interviewer speak to Huckabee supporters. Doubtful he'll find anyone of similar caliber (and no I'm not speaking about gun collections).

"Huckabee speaks to Jesus.. so vote for him!"

We can see how well that mentality turned out with Bush.

I'm about as dangerous in a voting booth as a wolverine in a burn victims ward and I don't give a enough of a crap to spend my valuable time on sifting through the bullshit. Not voting is my choice of action, and I suggest all others who are misinformed or uninformed do the same.

The interviewer was an ass...you could see in the beginning he already had a pre-conceived notion that people don't know the issues or do their homework...so he was constantly trying to drive that home with his condescending tone.

And yes honkeytonk73...he must be one of the "few" well informed voters...because NO one would be as informed as you...you're above the masses and the "little people" right?

17% tax much? Behold: The Finnish taxes!

As an average Joe with no kids and single living in Helsinki and earning 33600€ a year you pay 24,5% in taxes.
Cap is at a friendly 60%. That includes Municipal tax, Progressive state tax, church tax and healthcare payment. (in order of hugeness)

On top of this 22% VAT on everything. And special taxation on tobacco and gas, which makes up about 75% of the 1,4€/liter price. but at least there aren't any road charges.

And no, all this doesn't give free health care, but it's capped at 600€/person per year. I guess it's free if you are broke tho, seeing as you are getting monies from the social anyways.
