Wow, this is the first time I've seen Obama really lay into Hillary, and it's about time.

Seeing this, and seeing the completely anemic response on the Sunday talk shows, I think in the end this will help Obama.

He's tuned this message up very well, very quickly. This is an area where he's consistently had trouble in the polls and primaries, and now he's got a damn good speech for it.

I think Clinton's already overreached on this one, trying to make herself out to be something she's obviously not, and it'll end up with her being the butt of jokes.

I doubt it'll move the needle in PA, but I bet this will pay dividends in Indiana.

This is relevant:

Btw, he actually looks a little pissed. That's the first time I've seen that, and I'm glad he has it in him. As I said on another thread, he has shown himself to be the best counterpuncher in modern American politics. Let's hope he keeps it up.

Laughable that he has to reinforce "being a religious man" in order to get votes.. I hate it so much that an intelligent man, a rational man, a modern day genius, someone who could lead a country to fortune and prosperity, a leader the like of which the world has never seen before, would not get voted into office if he didn't believe in the Christian god.

Makes me despair.

gotta hand it to him, it's to his credit that he's got a such great way of turning dirty pool politics to his benefit.

I agree with dannym. "I'm a man of deep faith" bullshit, you have a brain, no you're not. (I simplify faith to mean the christian god, which is just ridiculous.)

Other than that, this is a good speech and I think Tofumar's analysis is correct, he is a great counterpuncher. But really, he is just cutting a lot of bullshit and ironically giving "straight talk". (who's slogan was that?)

^ When did you hear Leon Trotsky speak? Were you at a Communist Party meeting or something? I bet you were, you naughty boy!

All I hear is Constitutional Law Professor Obama. A good speaker involves the audience.

It's ironic that people claim to want a president who doesn't serve them steaming piles of verbal bullshit and just tells it like it is - but once someone tries to do that, they are raked over the coals for it.

People say they want the truth... unless it's not what they want to hear.

An openly atheist campaigner has ___ chance to win their party's nomination.

a. 90%
b. 50%
c. 25%
d. 0%

Respond honestly, now.

I'm not commenting on the right or wrong of this question. I'm merely looking at the reality of the American political climate of 2008. You and I both know that an atheist has a snowball's chance in hell of winning ANYTHING.

You know this to be true so let's just go batshit crazy and admit that Obama is...oh, I dunno...a politician who wants to win.

Part of this means he's gotta blow some sunshine. Does this make him an evil man? I don't think so.

You may disagree: your ideal candidate is, I'm sure, a non-apologetic atheist who's never set foot in a church since (s)he was a toddler.

And you know what? That's MY ideal candidate too. But mine is not the only point of view in America. Reverent people exist in the real world of 2008. They outnumber us atheists by a very very wide margin.

So while it would be nice for those with faith to set aside their prejudices to back an atheist running for president, it seems that we shall have to be the bigger men and women...by putting up with such platitudes.

Amen to that!! ;-)

But seriously, I agree completely. It's is very sad state of affairs. Maybe one day those of us who have learned enough to recognize the fallacies and pitfalls of religion will outnumber those who haven't made it there yet. We can only hope.

indeed. it is a sad state of affairs. Not that people are religious, but that they feel they have to be to get voted into office.

america is behind the rest of the world in that respect.
