The scene of all the men walking towards the mushroom cloud was totally amazing.

I'm sure these soldiers didnt live long and healthy lives after marching through that stuff.

I noticed one of the had a Geiger counter. 'Wow corporal lookit that little needle go, the boys at HQ will be happy to know what a success this was'

Granted I'm working on the assumption that marching into a freshly nukes area is probably bad for your health, but I wonder if they had any idea of the risks (the soldiers that is).

There was a great website I was linked to once that compiled detailed sailors stories about being involved in tests like these -- I wish I could find it again..

"Remember boys, this area will be quite dangerous after the explosion, tape up your ankles and wrists really well!"

"Uh, Sir, what about our faces?"

"What are you, a Commie?"

I dont think they were exposed to fallout, or radiation. The radiation sick/kill zone around these small nukes is actually tiny. If you avoid the fallout, your OK.

I'm going to guess this was at the Nevada Test Site. Man, that must have been a sight to see in real life. That being said, I'm glad I wasn't there (and hopefully never actually see it either...)

So.. was the "coming out of the trenches with guns ready" part of the actual test scenario? As in.. the tactic would be that ground soldiers go in after a nuclear strike?

Erm... except:
From This page about experiences with the Nevada tests shows the US military's horrendous treatment of their own populous during this:
After thousands of sheep died immediately after a radiation cloud passed over them, some southern Utah ranchers brought unsuccessful suits against the federal government in 1955. The government response in court was that “a combination of factors including malnutrition, poor management, and adverse weather conditions” led to the animals’ death. (Killing Our Own [36]) Internal memos to the contrary from AEC researchers were suppressed. Sworn statements by sheepherders, testifying such epidemics among their herds of livestock had never happened until the fallout clouds went over them, were discounted and the ranchers were ridiculed by government officials. Many of the communities in Southern Utah constantly dusted with fallout were predominantly Mormon. They didn’t drink or smoke, as their religion commanded, so cancer was not prevalent. However, in 1956 and 1957, many people were diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma, other types of cancer or acute thyroid damage. Prior to this, cancer was rare. By 1960, there was an epidemic.

So... yeah, trying to suggest that these nukes were 'safe' is a little insane.

In fact read the rest of that page, with interviews with soldiers posted on during those tests... a calous disregard for the well being of people and animals was shown by the US Government during that time. And I'm sure those with the disregard explained it all away with the bullshit reasoning of 'It's for the safety of the nation'

There was a movie produced in either late 80s or early 90s that starred charlie sheen which directly relates to this. His character was one of the soldiers on the ground and the story revolves around the failing health of him and his soldier friends that participated in this horrendous mistake. Many of the voices protesting this exposure to our own troops were silenced and those that developed de-abilitating conditions were ignored and pushed out of the public eye by the government. It really happened folks. (wish i could remember the title :-(

Actually this looks like it was filmed in New Mexico, about a 30 minute drive up 54 from El Paso Texas. I was stationed in El Paso for a few years and have been in this area several times. Its called McGregor Base camp, and another 30-45 minutes from there a place called Oro Grande, where I know for a fact that the US used to station troops during nuclear tests. I say New Mexico, because the opening scene of the convoy driving down the long road with the mountains in the back looks strikingly familiar. That long road is what goes from 54 to McGregor, and that skyline looks very close to what I remember. Of course I could be wrong.
